Roughly 10% of all murders in America. That's a significant number.

Better chance of being hit by lightning .

Not true. You're more than 20 times more likely to be killed by a police officer/law enforcement in the United States every year.

I don’t want to argue especially in this thread but how is this possible. A single American isn’t even 20 times likely to be pulled over by a cop.

Every year roughly 51 Americans are struck and killed by lightning. Every year on average roughly 1240 Americans are killed annually by police and law enforcement.

And a lot of those killings are justified.

People shoot at cops all the time. The Breanna Taylor thing everyone is so incensed over wouldn't have happened had the guy not shot at the police. He actually hit an officer. He says he didn't know it was the cops but we all know that's bullshit that only people like Ogie believe. Police having to kill people to defend themselves or defend someone else in mortal danger is not uncommon at all, and is justifiable. Also that figure that gets cited usually cites people who die in car accidents caused by somebody fleeing, something police dont really do any more but still has times when its necessary.

If you are not breaking any laws, or in the company of people breaking laws, your odds of being killed by a cop are near zero. You are way more likely to be struck by lightning. I suppose its possible, but you'd need to be supremely unlucky. You may as well never get in a car again if you're that risk averse.

If you are breaking the law its still supremely unlikely unless you are being violent. You'd need to be really acting up to get killed by a cop.

This Minneapolis case is one case in years where its obvious the cop went over the line. In a country of three-hundred thirty million, at this scale of people with the incredible third-world crime rates the USA has its just a matter of time before the wheel gets spun enough that it lands of "accidentally killed by overbearing cop".

Nobody should be reasonably afraid of this happening to them. It would take extraordinarily bad luck. If you dont like reading about it on the news? I suggest you stop watching the news, or at least watch it with a more critical eye. But we are not going to abandon the American way of life because people get upset about news that doesn't affect them. If that means using the military to put this shit down, so be it.

Doesn't matter how you spin it or why it happens. I'm sure some of the other 15k murders committed in America are justified too. We hold police to a different standard for a reason. Because of video and sunlight we're seeing a lot more questionable murders by police. We're seeing more abuses of power. We're also seeing some being held accountable. This wasn't happening 5+ years ago.

I like everyone.

People should be honest at the very least.

No, I am completely kidding. And I agree.

The harassment of Black Americans seems like it isn't that rare, though. As the guys at Carmel say, "If you get pulled over by the cops, tell them you play or played football at a Catholic school."

The harassment of black Americans? What does that even mean? I get harassed by cops at least once a year. I have some horror stories. It doesn't make me issue a blanket statement that cops are all evil.

To me it's a form of racism to say black people they are all oppressed. And so is hiring a "diversity and justice" reported to ask question about offensive terms at press conferences. This is hypothesizing a racial crisis into being.

Don't you hate unverifiable anecdotes? You've said that before.

I am grateful, when I deal with the police, that I don't appear different in any way or that I don't have issues that make me seem somehow suspicious. People with disabilities and with mental illnesses often have a hard time with cops. I am also grateful, when being pulled over, I am not Black, because some people--good people, even--have it drilled in their head that Black = suspicious or less than human, etc.

@bad rogue: Sure, there are hundreds of millions of interactions each year, and almost all of them seem to be ok. But if you think there aren't patterns to cops behaving badly, you're being willfully ignorant. I'm pro-cop, too.

I love how a good chunk of posters on this board--whatever they represent--think that as soon as you say something they feel is a shot at their people, they assume you are the enemy.

Keep it in your pants, ladies. Your arguments can survive a little probing.

No, they are milking it. It's CNN. The talking heads are sitting there with long faces like they are the victims. They are claiming this is racism or attack on the press when it is clearly a case of the cops are not sure what to do. The cops are gonna make mistakes. They did. Big fucking deal.

Now if they beat the shit out of them and threw them in jail, that's different. But the head of CNN called Minnesota's Governor, and they were released within minutes.

This was a case of the cops not knowing what to do. CNN is not the story here.

It was pretty ridiculous.

"Mr Policeman, we're from the news, where would you like us to set up? We thought this was where you told us.

Silence

" Please just tell us where you'd like us to set up our equipment."

Silence

"Sir, we're live on the air...where should we set up?"

Police "You're under arrest"

I'm going to disagree with you on some of this. It not being racist, I have no problem with. It is absolutely a big deal and an attack on the press. The police arresting the media even after producing their credentials (even after the officers appear to reach out to their superiors) IS a MAJOR problem. We have a 1st amendment for a reason. If we're going to allow law enforcement/government to arrest properly credentialed members of the press who are covering them, we won't have a country. That can't be allowed to happen regardless of the media outlet. Cops in Mayberry should know not to do this.

Agree with the fact that everyone should know that this is verboten, that this is one of the basic reasons we have the USA. Learn from it.

But it was a mistake they corrected immediately. That's good. That's real good.

I don't think it was malicious, but it is a mistake that can't happen. It's also a mistake we ALL should make noise about. In the future it could be malicious and an attempt to cover up a corrupt act by government.

The CNN arrests were performance art. It was staged. Asked to move they stayed and filmed it.

I remember the G8 protests in Chicago about ten years ago now. It was cordial if not chummy between police and protesters, everyone was kinda having a good time. There was no friction, no hate...none of that. Everyone was taking pictures together.

That's changed now. The hate and rage here is over the top, and there's no real cause for it. Eventually hate violence beget hate and violence, its clear the state is only going to tolerate so much more of this.

This has gotten past "making noise", people are no longer recognizing the humanity in one another. The dissociating effects of the internet have well and truly spiraled out of control, and as the need to constantly draw more spectacle to their cause rises so too does the violence of their actions. Eventually the tanks get called in.
