If the prosecutors feel they can get a conviction on 2nd degree, fine. Otherwise, an overcharge to playcate the masses now makes zero sense. The cop must be convicted. If he walks after a trial- because 1st/2nd degree was not able to be proven- then we will start this unrest all over again.

A lot of people dont want to admit this to themselves for reasons that are very understandable, but there's a decent chance he walks. Competing autopsies really aren't a great sign.

It is very rare for this to be the case, but him killing himself would be an extremely courageous and patriotic act. I say that not out of any malice in my heart for the man, it is just what is best for the people of the United States. If he feels terrible about what happened, like he lost control and upon reflection realizes how much profound damage he did, then the way to salvage at least some dignity would be to do the ultimately unthinkable.

There's nothing good that can come out of a trial. Even if he pleads guilty he'll make a statement, people will obsess over it. Quotes will be taken out of context, commentary will be made to further the divide, and god help us all if he gets acquitted.

In a very odd way he is in an extremely unique position to do a tremendous amount of good for his country.

There is no satiating the crazy left. If he kills himself justice was denied. If he is convicted it won't be long enough. If he is given the death penalty it will take to long to carry it out. Basically no matter what happens they will complain, and some with use it as an excuse to riot.

We've seen enough cops walk to understand that overcharging him is stupid. Get a conviction and live to fight another day. Accountability is what's desired.

They aren't competing autopsies though. The Medical Examiner determined that he died of asphyxiation in the final report. It was ruled a homicide. His lawyers can try and use the other factors but it's unlikely to work that the homicide doesn't count because he had medical issues.

If he pleads guilty, apologizes, and says that police tactics need to be overhauled then it could have a positive impact compared to where we are now.

im not a lawyer but it sounds like the lesser charges are included

I been saying this where a while now.
For the main cop though isn't he charged with the lowest class of murder and manslaughter? Can you be convicted of attempted manslaughter?

EDIT: just saw about the 2nd degree bump

I dont think there's anything he can say. He opens his mouth and it'll just make thing worse, no matter his tone. There's an army of people just chomping at the bit for him to make some sort of statement that they can tear apart and make grandiose proclamations over.

Even if he kills himself I can visualize the narrative right now that he did it to "seize control" or whatever. I was delusional to think there's any way this has a positive ending. No matter what happens next, it will make things worse.

Don't think they've said yet.

Press conference later will probably make it official.

I agree .

Five teenagers have been charged and another was fatally shot after an attempted vehicle theft in Lake County, Ill., which led to a high-speed chase into Chicago Tuesday morning, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.

A 16-year-old male, three 17-year-old males, and an 18-year-old woman, identified as Diamond Davis of Chicago, were charged with first degree murder in connection with the incident. They were charged with murder because a 14-year-old boy died of gunshot wounds sustained during the commission of a forcible felony, the sheriff's office said.

Lake County prosecutors have dropped murder charges that were filed against five Chicago teenagers last month after a member of their group was fatally shot by a homeowner in the north suburbs while they allegedly tried to break into a vehicle.

Hmmmm.

He could also ask that suspects dont resist arrest so forcefully too. ( Not that that happened here, just in general)

He's always threatened to kill people and cops and spoken of vulgar see crimes involving children? I don't think so, but way to try to make this about politics.

Its obvious that you only have a problem with him because he has been calling you out on your B.S. lately.

Actually, I take it back. The medical examiner called it a homicide but blamed heart failure from neck compression.

Does the upgraded charge mean there was new evidence to support? Not a good look to just upgrade based on the "climate."

Does the ME say that the neck compression caused his heart failure or that he went into cardiac arrest because of neck compression and heart failure (the condition).

You can read the reports yourself.
