Great Rebounder.

Favorite player as a kid.

I could rebound, but I couldn't shoot.

Hard to believe he's only the 4th NBA MVP in history to die (Wilt, Moses, Kobe).

I missed Bernsie today telling us how Unseld couldn't make a roster in today's NBA. Look. At. The. Bodies.

He was in my top 10 favorites when I was a kid. I was a fan of Walt Frazier and those great Knicks teams, and the Bulls. But I always liked Unseld and Elvin Hayes.

Sort of a 'hands up, no shoot' type player.

Only him and Wilt won a R.O.Y. and M.V.P. same season.

Wes was my guy too. Go Bullets. Gave me hope. He couldn't really jump and wasn't fast, but hussled, had great position for rebounds and could set a mean screen. Decent shot too. Remember watching him against Boston in 75. No idea why.

Were you a Mahorn/Iavaroni/Ruland style center at Fenwick?

My guess is that he was virtually identical to the great Joe Stiffend (Phillips '82), absent the speed and springs. :D

Yeah, I didn't think Phillips sounded right for him. Then Cincinnati, right?

You're right. I've been giving Phillips credit for him uncorrected for decades.

Lord knows we can use it.  Our 82 legends would have been Go-Go Golston and Bernard Jackson.

Yep that's him. They love Joe Stiffend on the West Side. You can't mention old school West Side Hoops without his name being referenced.

Carl Golston is the Phillips star I wrongly remember.

And being proud of Chris Hinton.

Oh, I had speed and springs.

I did not play in high school though. I was the PA announcer for the hoops games.

I mainly remember Wes for an afro, being a wide load and always wearing a mean mug.

Both from Stateway too. Carl Golston still plays in the 50 and over league these days.

I will always remember Hinton for going in the Elway trade when I was little kid. I remember when I was following the 83 draft and first started hearing of him I was happy as hell to find out that he was first and foremost Phillips guy that attended Northwestern and then he was a true Low End guy.

I remember him as the Bullets coach primarily. Reading what people say about him he seems like one hell of a great person. saw some tidbit that Manute Bol was giving him the stink eye about something and Wes was going to kill him but was held back by about four guys.

Yeah, everyone forgets that. Is Hinton a Hall of Famer? I would think he has to be, but the football HOF is so weird.

I just looked it up and he isn't in. That's absurd. Outside of Anthony Muñoz how many better offensive linemen were there in his time? I can't really think of any, maybe there were a couple. Covert? Maybe for a year or two, short career though. The pro football Hall is strange.

I think it had a lot to do with playing with the Colts. They were horrifically bad back then. That killed him. He was every bit the player Jimbo was if not better but his team was terrible.

That's probably right. Also it probably hurt him that they moved him around the line so much. If he had played the glamor spot at left tackle the whole time he'd probably be in.

I also remember being pissed that Dick Motta was their coach, but he couldn't do it with the Bulls.
