The natural life-cycle of a market economy has been rudely interrupted by the advent of the corporate bailout. On one hand this has led to a security market that does literally nothing but go up, even in defiance of common sense and reason. And its tempting because as long as the American military has its place in the world the Treasury can print money basically as much as it wants.

But big firms are supposed to get too big for their own good and fail, their failure seeding the next generation of entrepreneurs and bright people to capitalize on voids left in the market. We can even make exceptions for twisted monstrosities like GM, which by any reasonable measure should've failed, because it does provide a lot of really good jobs but the amount of money to goes towards bailing out XLF holdings to no discernible public benefit has really robbed people of the perception of opportunity.

There's still a shitload of money coursing through America. Aside from rage and obesity money is the thing America lacks least. But people are disenchanted because the system seems (and frankly is) rigged, and its really rigged needlessly because the whole point of the market cycle is that wealth doesn't disappear, it just transfers. We've lost that, and it has everything to do with a political impetus to keep the economy chugging along for appearances every time there's even a blip.
