Never seen it. Worth watching?

Terrible movie. One of the worst war movies ever made. Ridiculous story line.

Interesting variety of opinions here.

I'll knock it out of the days this week after work.

I thought the first 2 hours of the movie were one of the best I ever saw. The last half hour is bonkers.

The moral of the story is that none of them are front to back great. All of them have quirks or dive into the weeds based on the Director's "art" or "vision".

I can't believe no one has nominated "Good Morning Vietnam" as the best

I think it started as another aborted attempt at Heart of Darkness which is why the plot is so unconventional. I'd stick to the theatrical release...the director's cut is pretty ponderous IMO. It was written by Walter from The Big Lebowski. Milius helped the Coen Brothers break into Hollywood so they wrote him into the movie. Goodman nails him perfectly. He wrote the Indianapolis scene in Jaws after several writers took a pass and couldn't get it.

The Ride of the Valkyries scene is one of the all-time great scenes in cinema. That must have been amazing to see in a theater in 1979 pre CGI.

Apocalypse Now is a movie of amazing scenes but as a whole its not as good but still an interesting movie.

If you want to check out something Vietnam related watch Last Days in Vietnam. Some of those guys drove for my dad's trucking company in San Pedro. I didn't know what they went thru to get here until I watched that.

A lot of bad takes in this thread. It's easily the best Vietnam movie.

How is it good? The story itself is stupid and no way plausible. Brando was horrible. Sheen was boring and the boat trip was stupid. The only thing entertaining was the Smell of Napalm in the morning line and the notion of surfing while under fire being pretty funny. Platoon was pretty bad but Apocalypse Now was worse.

all this movie is known for is that 'smell of napalm' scene/camera work and Waagner's score. that was the only good part. and that one scene they've rode for the last 40 years w/ this movie.
