"Idealism" is the root problem - i.e. trying to be something that you are not. We have a set of damn rules in this country that are pretty easy to abide by. Just fucking follow them. Its not brain surgery.

One set of rules is how you change the rules. Some people who lean authoritarian don't like that. They want to be in charge of changing them, not to have to follow a process that a bunch of now long dead guys figured out.

Nobody wants to pass a constitutional amendment any more. It's just easier to complain.

I didn't. People were literally protesting for those reasons (Not explicitly eating at TS's restaurant) and I wanted the country to open up well before then. I'm clearly not dismissing my beef with the shutdowns.

The over policing, harassment and police abuse creates a particular outcome. The war on drugs and over policing of poor communication hasn't exactly made many of these communities better. In many cases they've made them worse despite the huge investment.

That's a pretty big distinction.

It's pretty hard to argue that a protest where bringing an American flag is likely to get one yelled at if not beaten isn't anti-American even if the act of protesting itself is as American as it gets.

That's a great question that probably has many answers. I currently live on a block where I might see a cop car once a week. They drive to the end of the block, wave when they see you and turn around and leave. I think that over policing is a continuous presence and actions that make a community feel uneasy instead of "safe".

I don't think people being pissed at someone waving an American flag during a protest is anti-American anymore than I believe that someone waving a Confederate flag or an "Africa" flag is anti-American. I say this as a man who was indoctrinated to love America/flag/military in an extreme way by southern blacks who came of age during the Great Depression. To some, the flag represents the system that they're protesting. I don't think the people who spat on soldiers or burned flags during the Vietnam War hated America either. I think they just hated the war for various reasons.

There are fewer things more American than demanding change during incoherent and sometimes violent protests. This has been true throughout the history of our country.
