Every year I’ve been told the cicadas are coming in mass we don’t get them. Next town over perhaps but never where I live. I’m one part grateful and part disappointed.

The mountains at the Kane/Dupage county line are pretty ferocious.

In 6th or 7th grade, my science teacher fried some up at home and brought them in for us to try as a snack. I did not partake.

We have covered the cicada topic MANY times but always enjoy the review.

I don't get the hate; I like 'em. My wife and I play overs/under on the date we hear the first annual which is usually around July 1. I was unaware this was a year of a periodic cicada so when we heard them much earlier it was confusing to say the least. But out here in ex-farmland Arlington we don't hear many like it seems you guys do east of 294.

When my kids were growing up (a long time ago) when they each turned ten I took them to Washington DC. When I took my youngest it was during one of the cicada years. Throughout the entire trip he was more interested in chasing and catching cicadas than looking at monuments and paying attention to the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Good memories

I swear back when I grew up these things were like every few years. Not every 7 or whatever they say.

The real brood comes in 2024 round these parts, but this year is the sub-brood.

I love these little guys. I was out there the other day chasing the seagulls away and putting those poor little cicadas that were on the sidewalk back into the mulch where they could develop until able to fly. I also chased away a coyote who came to the block to breakfast on them.

The noise of the seventeen-year variety really calms tinnitus. I can't wait until they are back. I also find the regular cicadas mentally calming.

Life explodes when the cicadas come about, as just about everything eats them and they are completely defenseless. Its a huge protein source that positively effects all animals except for Herbivores.

that makes sense cause there's definitely no where near as many this time around as when the big wave comes through. I remember in the 90s looking at trees completely covered in them.

Am I wrong for being much more annoyed with Locusts than Cicadas?

Locusts are pests and can destroy fields and crops in a matter of days. Cicadas are harmless outside of the noise, and they will all be dead in a month anyway.

Yes....birds and four-leggeds alike are feasting on them. I love the little things--and this is coming from one of those wusses who's afraid of bugs. Cool-looking alien eyes, too.

My dog keeps eating them. It's so freaking gross. Been a little pukey the last few days.
