I was just reading about the Atlanta police shooting. It was just a week ago that the WSJ had a big article praising the city’s mayor and approach. However, this recent incident shows that all this goes way beyond one city, one police department, one mayor.

In most of these incidents, there is a reason for the cops to be there (called to scene usually for a petty crime). There is a person that resists. And then there is a disproportionate police response. Somewhere in there is an opportunity to change the way police respond. Normally there are more police than suspects. Our society has obviously trained and/or allowed the police response to be too aggressive for too long. They literally know no other way.

You probably need a second or third cup of coffee before you engage in Sunday morning trolling.

I agree with about 90 percent of this. I read that by the time the police arrived the guy had moved to a parking spot. At that point who gives a shit? But at the same time, you grab for a cop's weapon or whatever it's probably not going to end well. This didn't have to happen.

I didn't realize he cooperated on the sobriety test then resisted.

Yeah it’s ridiculous that a guy, possibly drunk or hung over, is dead after simply sleeping in his car. I honestly don’t get why said person would resist and grab for a taser, and I don’t get why you shoot to kill a person moving away from you. It’s all senseless.

Sheriff Dart would often talk about the issues in policing, and a big part of the problem is mental illness. When you add in suspects that are high or drunk, the police are often encountering people in a poor state of mind. There absolutely needs to be a different approach with impaired individuals.

I just assumed they were going to arrest him after he failed, and that caused him to resist. But if he’s drunk/impaired that at least explains him acting irrationally. Senseless...

I just saw the Atlanta video. I don’t know about this person but wonder if people resist to that level for seemingly small crimes is due to priors. For some even the most minor transgressions get you sent back into a bad system.

The second thing I thought of is how are cops now supposed to do their jobs when justified now.

Are you suggesting shooting a drunk person in the back as they run away from your incompetent ass is justifiable?

It doesn't help the hold police accountable thing when you misrepresent what took place here. All you need to add there is the cop was wearing a white hood and robe and then posed with the body for a selfie after the deed was done.

.

Exactly. Police reform is beyond me, and I have no idea how I'd be held accountable if I were an officer, but there's so much minor shit that people get booked on that I'm wondering if it's even worth pursuing as a cop. It ruins lives as you suggested. But then I as a cop decide what's worth pursuing vs what's not, and I doubt that's the way we want the system run.

So what?

He didn't grab their gun. He didn't grab their bag of ricin. He didn't grab their blaster. He didn't grab their light saber.

He grabbed a taser and ran.

The cops remained in possession of the guy's ID and his plates and his fucking car.

How is anyone arguing justification to shoot this guy?!

Here he is holding what looks like a taser in his hand

I originally watched a CNN segment breaking down the footage with an expert, but curiously they neglected to show this part of the video.

I obviously agree that lifting a taser off a cop doesn't merit an execution.

They should just go back to beating the fuck out of resisting suspects with their nightsticks.

 "Unarmed!"

He had the cop's taser.

"Non-violent!"

He physically resisted arrest and took an officer's weapon.

"Nothing wrong with how he conducted himself whatsoever."

Did this guy actually see anything?

Rayshard Brooks holding what appears to be a taser after cops were contemporaneously shouting that he was grabbing at their taser and eventually that he had gotten a hold of their taser.
