union just rejected MLB offer.

Looks like they're telling MLB just tell us the # of games and when to report.

So going to have a 48 game season.

What a joke baseball is. I thought I'd never see the day where the NHL surpasses MLB as the #3 sports in America.

The level of distrust between the sides is so apparent. They continue to view negotiations as a zero sum game. They have really ceded international growth to the NBA, and generally done nothing to market their stars.

At this point, every game should be out there for free viewing or at least on regular cable channels like ESPN. Make the game accessible right now to all potential fans.

The owners reneged, they had an agreement to play 81 games at prorated salaries. Fuck the owners.

It wasn't set at 81 games.

I don't see where the owners are reneging. Did the March 26 agreement state that the deal applied only if fans attended, or not? The statement by MLB clearly says it did. So either they are lying, or they did not reneg.

Well 75 games at 70% pay is basically same as 50 at full prorated pay. SO they will have to drop the season to under 40 to make a real difference.

But that wasn't the offer and the owners would have compromised further. The players weren't willing to take anything less than 100 percent.

Both owners and players think the fall 2nd wave will put the playoffs in jeopardy. Since Karen runs the government, yeah, pretty good chance she shuts it down when 70 year olds start dropping again.

heard some good radio today about how bad in shape baseball is today. they made some good points

you have the old baseball fan who likes to watch the game and when it comes to stats its just the old slash line of avg , hr, rbi.

Then you have the analytics fan. he's the one who's made the game a game of stratomatic. to follow the game, you basically need a textbook to define all these new categories the analytics world has made up.

when you go to a ball game, if the analytic fan and the old baseball fan meet up, the analytic fan looks at the baseball fan w/ disgust. why would you not want to learn about analytics so to better analyze the game. analytic guy can't let it go. old baseball fan thinks the opposite, why can't i just sit here AND WATCH the game without you getting mad at me about it!

Last week Manfred was 100% certain that they would have a season and today he isn't 100% certain.

Perhaps a last ditch effort to motivate the sides to come to an agreement instead of having him mandate a small number of games?

Cancelling 7/8ths of the draft and screwing over the minor leagues, will there be baseball in 5 or 10 years, especially if they don't play at least 70 games this season.

I'm sure it is. Manfred's job is to do what is best for the game. Not having a season could put the game on life support.

Neither side cares about the game. I am ok with owners of businesses and workers fighting for what’s best for them. But what bothers me about professional owners is that they own what amounts to a public good. It doesn’t have to be a zero sum game all the time. The NBA has done a fantastic job with growing internationally, putting its product on tv to increase revenues, and showcasing its stars.

Baseball is just letting the sport die a slow death.

It's not just that. Baseball has to make many changes. There's too many games, too many Ks, and too many walks. There's probably too many innings. When guys like me and you die, there will be an audience the size of soccer.

They’ve made the game tough to watch. The average game stretches too long especially when it runs past 10:00 on week nights. As you say, the three outcome at bats are annoying.

I never understood why they don’t spread the product out like football has done. There should be at least one national league and one american league day game every day. When I did fantasy we loved following games during the day. I’d love to watch Trout play more. I am getting into bed as his games are starting, and generally they’re not on tv anyway.

The Dodgers and Giants have been able to overcome being on Pacific Time. I don't know why the Angels can't seem to. They should definitely play more day games, can't see how it'd hurt.

And it's another reason to move the Rays to Portland.

The owners have a major cash flow issue this year with no fans. While they’re sitting on billion dollar franchises, that is not a liquid asset in the short run. They have to deal with season tickets holders and the lack of ongoing revenues from having fans in stadiums.

So while it’s not a sacrifice, it is a serious business problem.

The Giants should play every game during the day. I have been to a dozen games there, and it gets freezing once the sun goes down. From 70 to sub 50 very fast.....

Don’t eat the garlic fries.

Unless you're poor family scrubs like the McCaskeys, owning a pro sports franchise is a prestige thing, not a serious business thing. Obviously that doesn't mean owners should just set their money on fire, but that's where they lose me on the "both sides" part.
