Never heard about this til last week. A google search shows it's the emancipation of slaves in Texas.

I never heard about the Tulsa massacre til 3 months ago.. Seems like an important part of history to exclude. Obviously it's absolutely horrendous. I'm still not entirely sure what juneteenth means.

The “whitewashing” of U.S. history in classes and textbooks has been discussed as a concern for decades but has suddenly gained new relevance.

its awful and it's literally why i didnt go to traditional college. i went to 12 years of school as a child and routinely found inaccuracies in what they were telling us. time and again the things they made us learn were flat out wrong. 20 years later im posting on a shitty message board to people who dont fucking care all because my education was horrendous.

I guess District 65 must have been very progressive. We learned a lot of black history. We definitely covered Juneteenth. I don't remember ever studying the Tulsa Massacre however.

Went to HEHS class of 05. Definitely learned about the Tulsa massacre in HS and it’s kind of stunning to me the amount of people who say they’ve never heard about it.

Don’t remember learning about Juneteenth in school. I think the first time I heard about it was from Army buddies in Louisiana

There was a segment on 60 Minutes about it last week I think and there was an African-American man they talked to. He grew up in Greenwood and went to school in Oklahoma all his life and he was saying when he first heard about the Tulsa Massacre in college he thought the professor was messing with him. He had never heard of it from either school or family.

It was definitely odd.

I went to a pretty diverse high school and I don’t think we learned about either of those topics. Then again my daughter just completed a year of Euro-history and they only got through the French Revolution. I told her at least she’d learn about the world wars in U.S. history next year (assuming they get that far).

Ever hear about the Black Hand? The organization terrorized Italian immigrants. The Osage Indian killings?

Let’s be honest, we only scratch the surface in American history. They hit the major Presidents and wars. Sure, you might learn about the underground railroad and Talleyrand, but it doesn’t go very deep.

I think that’s part of what is meant by whitewashing. There is a belief that textbooks minimize or ignore horrific events while highlighting the heroic ones.

I think there was a paragraph about it in my High School history class, and it was also called the Tulsa race “riot” if I’m remembering correctly.

Internet and YouTube rabbit holes have filled in the gaps concerning MANY terrible worldwide historical events over the years.

We touched on the Tulsa massacre in high school but there is a ton to cover and the 20th century as a whole gets shorted. Our school worked on that on the world side by making it a 3 semester course vs traditional 2 but couldn’t do same for US. really, if you wanted to know the 20th century stuff you almost had to self learn. When I started taking the more concentrated classes in college it was crazy how you realized the bare minimum you learned.

Juneteenth has been mentioned on the bored before I believe.

Actually, I am a huge fan of history and have studied it stuff extensively. My favorite topic is the British Empire, but I enjoyed the Eastern Roman Empire, Ancient China, the Ottoman’s among other topics. And of course, I love American history.

I wish we would use history as a lesson rather than trying to ignore it. At some point, just about every group was persecuted unless you descended from nobility.

I still know how to open a bottle of Rolling Rock using a seatbelt, but that was elementary school learning. Never quite mastered the lighter as bottle opener trick to the level my friends could do it; but then I've never been enough of a smoker to cart a lighter around 24/7.
