We learned about Juneteenth in a Civil War class I took in college. The one thing that really stood out from that class was the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in states that were part of the Union. Juneteenth may have ended slavery in the Confederate states, but Kentucky kept slavery going for another five months until the 13th amendment was ratified by the states in December of 1865.

I didn't know anything about Juneteenth until I moved to Texas. Learned about it here, and just considered it a regional/sectional/state holiday. I don't think it's tremendously embarrassing for someone from Maine to have no knowledge of the holiday. I mean by definition it's a Texas holiday at its origins.

Much like nobody in Oregon knows what the hell Casimir Pulaski day is.

I'd be all for Juneteenth being elevated to more national prominence, but this idea that if you haven't been aware of Juneteenth for the past XXX years is a bit unrealistic.
