Certainly not now. I tried to get one over 6 months or so ago, had all of the documents required but the dipshit clerk at the DMV didn't accept my Social Security Card because one of the letter of my name on the card was smudged. You could clearly make out the name but this former Nazi wannabee was pissy about it. So now I have to go to the Social Security Administration to get a new card and return to the DMV again when this pandemic crap is over with.

16 years from inception to when it's supposed to go live. How important could it really be.

I think some of that was from legal challenges. It probably is important because it adds a level of security to stop people with fake IDs. When it finally does go into effect there will be angry people at the airport who can't fly because they don't have one. The fact that the airlines will be hurting for business probably means they don't want to deal with any non-flying passengers with tickets for awhile.

Shit can the RealID and spend the $$$$ to implement pathogen testing at customs at all airports. The greatest threat moving forward is a microbe, not some terrorist.

I am not even sure why as it pertains to travel they couldn't just stick with a passport. It isn't like you go to some dark shop in a alley and get a fake one very easily.

The Real ID doesn't cost anything more than a regular driver's license, but is only for domestic flying. A passport is nearing $100 and passports take awhile to process unless you pay the expedited processing fee. If you renew your passport less than 10 years after it expires you save $30 on the initial appointment fee. If you let it lapse then you have to repeat the whole process with getting another photo and doing the initial appointment again.

It used to be that you could go to Mexico and Canada with your driver's license. There is an ID card that's a cheaper version of a passport that's for Canada and Mexico and a couple islands in the Caribbean.

The best time to get your passport is long before you want to take a trip. You'll save money that way.

But the Real ID license was not going to extend the expiration date on your current license.

My DL expires July 2021. My passport expires Nov 2020. So I would have had to either take a chance with not flying until I renewed my license in June 2021, or renew it to meet the Real ID standards in October 2020, then renew it again in July 2021. And pay the "regular driver's license" fee again.

So no, it wasn't going to cost more than a regular license, but I would have had to pay for that regular license twice.

It's $30. The licenses are set to expire on a birthday, so when it renews varies for each person. It's just good to have it for air travel, but that is moot since they've kicked the can till 2021. $30 is a lot cheaper than the passport and the passport ID card.

It would have been $60 and double time at the DMV for me since they foolishly did not extend the renewal date upon getting a Real ID.

I don't think he gets that for some the deadline will not fall on their birthday.

Are you not going to renew your passport? Passports can be used while traveling domestically.

I doubt we will for the time being. That may change before November when they expire, but at this point it doesn't seem prudent to spend $250 on renewals when we do not plan on traveling for at least a year.

My license was set to expire this fall so I decided to get this taken care of now. Such a frustrating process. I went yesterday and had a vehicle to renew the tags for as well. I get up to the counter and find out that the machine for the drivers renewal is down. So I take care of the vehicle tags. As I am leaving I ask the lady to verify that I have all the proper things to get the real ID when their machine is working again. She says that I do. So I go back today and the exact same lady informs that I do not have the necessary items that I need one more form to prove my address. I about lost it on her because she was the one who told me yesterday that what I had was good. But what can you do? So I get the additional thing needed. The process gets started and I hear her make a phone call about an issue with my birth certificate. She says it needs a number on it that she does not see. I don't know what to tell her, it is the only birth certificate I have ever had. She gets a hold of another guy who works there and this guy has to come in to the office to figure it out. This dude thankfully gets it figured out and gets everything to work right in their computer. This dude leaves and the lady proceeds to finish things up. She goes to scan all the documents into their computer and that starts messing up. She thought she was going to have to call that other guy back again. But finally she gets it all scanned in and I get the fuck out of there.

its just another step towards everyone having ID chips implanted in them. but really that doesnt even matter anymore with facial recognition nearing 100% accuracy. it wont be long before we don't even checkout at stores or pay for anything physically... the AI just tracks you and charges your account.
