He was left behind in a field after moving the herd. No way to move him Easy without restraint as herd was two fields away and solo calves don’t move well. Have done it dozens of times over years but I made a massive mistake in judging size and then was too damn stubborn to admit it. Might of only been 200 pounds, he’ll if I know but he sure wasn’t the 125 pounder I was figuring on which was fairly obvious the moment I laid eyes on him. Just dumb move. Dumb.

I once saw out west cowboys rounding up the steer. Just like the old days with ropes and collies but quads along with horses.

I prefer to keep them close to the rest of the group and lure the group into the barn with feed, then provide an easy path for the loner to rejoin their friends. Chasing is my last option- I remember one time when I was very little, something spooked the group enough to run clean through a double-page-wire fence. Most stayed nearby, but one was finally cornered in an entry vestibule at a high school about two miles away. Good thing it was a Sunday morning.

Last year the group I got was 100% part Hereford, and one of the calmest, easiest to work with. This year, only one bald face, and about six of them that have that ears-up crazy scared reactions of a Chianina.

I never knew they priced matched themselves. Around Christmas, I did what they suggested to you because the price on something had dropped by $30.

It's always a an eye opener when stubborn supercedes dumb. "I know this is dumb, but I'm going to do it anyway."

Yeah.. I let impatience override logic and the correct way. If it was a week old it was the right move.. but it was obvious from the get go thatit was not. Usually I’d bring back a group of moms (or even a bull) to escort one or a small group back to the herd but I hD been in field all day and got dumb. It’s okay, every time I move I get a reminder of how dumb it was. Could of been worse.

There are so many lessons we learn, that it's impossible to pass them all on. My sister and Brother-in-law were in town this past week from DC, he loves to help out my Mom with projects, good hard working guy who's pretty handy. Very precise, engineer-like. His photos of his retaining wall project at home were amazing, compared to my sloppy efforts.

He wanted to help me with hay, but I didn't have any ready until the day they left. I had him over to give me a hand moving the dirt we had dug clearing a ditch, dumping it back into some low spots (no, not wetlands, silly). He's struggling with a loader tractor, moving levers the wrong way over and over and only performing one action at a time. He did get better as the day went on. But one time I turn around to see him barreling down the edge of the field over roughly-spread tailings with a full bucket all the way up and in road gear, right next to the ditch! I had to stop him and explain how much more stable it was to carry the load low and keep the speed down, we were not going to finish anyways. Whew, I can just imagine the horrible feelings if he'd been hurt doing something that seems so simple to you and me.

My friends 13 year old son passed away this morning.
He was born with birth defects, had been confined to a wheelchair his whole life and took meals thru a feeding tube. He lived longer than expected but it hurts so bad I can't put away my sadness right now. And his poor dad. Tom is a good man and he is a good father and I can't begin to imagine what he's going through. I've been stuck at work all day and I haven't talked to him but my wife has.
So im not much of a religious type but I'd ike to think he's finally running and playing somewhere finally after spending his life watching others do what he couldn't.
Godspeed TJ.

I got this new underwear and the pee hole isn't big enough for my gurthy junk so then I have to pull the top of the underwear down to hang a wire and it just isn't working.

Yeah. We need to regrade at least part of our backyard.

in august 2019, the goal of the foster child in our care went from "return home" to "permanency for the child". whats taken place the last 10 months has been anything but moving towards that goal.

There have been at least 6 court dates come and gone with the unemployed and lazy parents not even bothering to show up. this child is 3. she's been in care for 2 years 8 months. the parents have done absolutely nothing in that time.

they want the parents to be there for the hearing. Everyone's opinion was that its likely they won't show up at all but hey what the hell lets find out.

i've been a pessimist the entire time. I figured from the outset of the goal change i bet it takes 2 years. DCFS, my wife, our friends, our family have all said i was nuts. the case worker was like this will move fast.

All that said, my wife is pretty beat up this morning.

PS the mother is also 8 mo pregnant. I also assume this might be a reason they don't want to terminate potentially putting that child in harms way. I'm convinced the mom thinks these hearings are so that she can get her kid back.

Been sick the last couple of days and cant sleep at all - no fever or anything - just getting sick of it. Plus all the rona crap going on. Many many have it worse, just a little sick about being sick.

Hernia repair surgery yesterday (umbilical). Had this thing for over 10 years but never had a problem...ran 3 marathons and more 5K races than I can count with it. Finally started aggravating me this year.

I'm sore.

nothing compared to Doug's Dad. Wishing fast recovery and best of health for your Dad, Doug.
