I’ve expressed my opinion here before that the Dick Van Dyke Show is a landmark television comedy, from which you can trace many current and historic tv landmarks. The timing, the writing and precise execution of those two elements is amazing. But of all my favorite Dick Van Dyke’s, the one’s that are most satisfying are the one’s featuring Alan Brady (Carl Reiner). Here are my top performances in this show, which was only a slice of what the man produced (e.g. 2000 Year Old Man, Your Show of Shows)

Alan Brady Dick Van Dyke Episodes

5b.When a Bowling Pin Talks, Listen” Rob inadvertently steals material from a competitor
5a. “The Gunslinger” an odd, series finale that has a dream sequence where Alan Brady is the bad guy in Western take-off
5. Goes over the top as an intellectual that can’t be understood in the very funny, yet underrated “I’m No Henry Walden”
5. Three Letters From One Wife…classic writing…even though you don’t see him much, his presence looms
4. The Bottom of Mel Cooley Heart…he doesn’t get much meaner, or funnier
3. A Day In The Life of Alan Brady-Just hilarious, and still really holds up well. A forced documentary on Reiner…maybe the influence to his son’s Spinal Tap?) Really worth the watch, esp. the last scene
2. Baby Fat-Single funniest DVD episode ever. Ever. (“Buck Brown the cowboy star? Hardly?)
1. Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth…last 15 minutes is some of the best comedy ever

I wanted to provide a taste of this last one, but it seems to have been pulled…I’ll try to update

Those are all great but my personal favorite was “Obnoxious, Offensive, Egomaniac, etc” when Rob breaks into Alan’s office, and later his house to steal back the script with the nasty comments.

Alan Brady

I'm sad to say that I can still remember the Alan Brady song.

I thought he was ancient when I watched reruns of the DVD show in the late-70s. I was shocked to learn he was still alive in the 1980s and 1990s.

Man I hate to say this but I' m with you 110%
And I'm F'n older than you

The scene with Laura coming to apologize to Alan is brilliant . Carl was fantastic in that role .

"Ask Rob, I always liked you without your nose."

and the setup where he he is addressing his toupee heads, isn't just great writing, it is brilliant use of the screen and the rule of thirds...just the best

Yeah that’s definitely a classic episode but my favorite “spooky” one (which we watch around Halloween every year) is “Ghost of a Chantz” - where they stay in the haunted cabin.

Tonight Friday July 3rd... CBS airs two episodes, one being one of the all time greats "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" and the lesser known "October Eve" in color...they've run before like this...still some great, great comedy...on free tv yet
