No License Suspension for Failing to Pay Fines

The Illinois secretary of state will not be allowed to suspend a person’s driver’s license or vehicle registration for failing to pay a fine or penalty on time under this new law, with legislators expressing the belief that a person still has the right to drive to work despite not being able to afford a driving ticket.

The gas tax reminds me of something most are too young to remember on this board: tax wasn’t included in the price per gallon in Illinois until the mid 70s. I distinctly remember my dad waiting until we got to Wisconsin to buy gas because their listed price was the same but included tax.

In the same batch, the fines for texting and driving are increased but if I just blow it off and dont pay it.....nothing happens.

20+ years too late they finally increase the gas tax and less than a year later COVID happens and nobody is driving anymore so the funding levels are projected to be below what they were pre 2019 increase

Yeah I don't drive a ton like I used but I still filled up about every ten days. I have filled up twice since March 7th.

It isn’t hard to understand, the state delays to collect on a $200 ticket to ensure that person can stay as gainfully employed as possible, thus allowing the state to collect thousands in income tax.

Nobody said you don’t have to pay your fine, they just said license suspension isn’t a consequence of not paying.


It isn’t a lawless society, that is a dipshit approach to this. Laws are still there, it is the consequences that have changed.

What is the consequence for not paying? Are they taking money out of tax return?

Other than (potentially):

Wage garnishment;
Withheld income tax refund;
Lien levied;

or any number of other things that would still allow you to drive to work, yet motivate you to pay your fine

I’m guessing the people who weren’t paying their fines aren’t gonna be really frightened by those measures either

I’m guessing dipshits like you who couldn’t understand why the CPL stopped fining people for late book returns can’t comprehend why this new law represents sound legal and economic policy.

Stronger Penalties for Drivers Who Injure Someone While Violating Right-of-Way
This new law establishes a 12-month license suspension for a motorist who, while violating the right-of-way at crosswalks and in school zones, causes serious injury to another person.

This is a good one. I ALWAYS stop at a crosswalk for pedestrians. The problem often is that many of them are so surprised a motorist actually followed the law that they just stand there like dopes. Either that or they don't even know what a crosswalk marking means. And if a street has four lanes the driving public has pretty much decided that nullifies the crosswalk law. Good luck trying to cross Western Avenue in rush hour. I actually had a friend argue with me that you don't have to stop for pedestrians on a "busy" street.

The pedestrian having the ROW is a great law and makes great sense. What I don't understand is why some pedestrians take it for granted that every driver is paying attention. I see people cross at crosswalks all the time, head down or straight forward...never once acknowledging that cars might be approaching from either direction...or noticing whether said cars are even slowing down.

It's a "win the battle but lose the war" situation. You're perfectly in your rights to cross in front of vehicles. Good luck spending that lawsuit money when you get pancaked by a truck.

That would be a good idea. It's not as if the world didn't exist prior to the invention of the automobile. I bet people were happier back then too. The air was cleaner, that's for sure.

Ahhh yes I remember that . The mental gymnastics concocting those fantastic scenario of the noble working but poor single mothers managing to make it to the library to be able to initially take out the books but then working their fingers to the bone under various Simon Legree bosses who wouldn’t let them find the time in 14 days to be able to return what they borrowed as the reason why there weren’t returning them on time . Those were great .

Friend of mine just had a work friend die on his motorcycle the other day. A semi decided to change lanes and didn't see the guy on his bike in the lane next to him. Happened on Lewis Ave in Waukegan.

That's awful. Being next to a semi is a situation you definitely want to avoid. Riding like you are invisible and staying out of blind spots requires active riding. Completely different mindset than driving a car that far too many riders don't understand. Not saying that is the case here, but I see it all the time.
