I'm glad you could talk him through it; that's good on you to give your expertise away here. Troubleshooting requires knowledge, parts replacement just requires dexterity. I am not an HVAC technician, but I have been called an aspiring one at work before, and I may have played that role in an adult film or twenty, (several of them straight).

I know you disagreed with my light code suggestion, but I thought I remembered my Trane having a flash code when the A/C compressor capacitor took a dump, maybe I'm just misremembering, or my system is different.

It didn't just come loose it was landed in the wrong place (the condenser wire) and the y wire from the stat wasn't landed at all, just laying against the terminal. The only reason the fan came on at all indoors was because his stat was sending a signal to G as well as Y (although the Y signal was likely not being received by the board) when cooling was on.
I see it as one of only 2 possibilities. Sheer incompetence by the last tech or a setup for a service call.

Well, we get the impression KDDidn'tDidIt in this case, so your reasoning of a previous tech sounds likely, unless he's new to this home. Tough to prove in a legal case with chain of evidence control, but a discussion with the owner of former service company might be worth a shot. Then again, he may be directing said activities.

Is landed some modern term for soldered? Or do you mean connecting a socketed connector/wire.

Our heat went out in the winter and I asked my next door neighbor, who is a plumber, for a rec. I called his guy, really local lives in town, and he ended up replacing the board. It's a one-man operation, so it'd just be on him if he was trying a scam. Otherwise I always used Assured Air for the AC work.

Impossible to prove.
All I can say is that I'm seeing this exact scenario more and more frequently.

Yeah, I'd be leaning more towards that incompetence angle from the details. No sense bothering with a phone call to tell him you'll never call him again, but it might be worth it to drop a little hint to the neighbor, or just let sleeping dogs lie. Sounds like Ol' Darko HVAC, LLC from here on out!

Perhaps you can pay Darko back by visiting his Estate during a regional festival later this Autumn, and either burning some of his furnishings or ravaging his elderly neighbor. Those seem to be the bored traditions.

my deadbolt turns open like 95% of the way, but it won't fully open...is that likely to be an alignment issue of some kind ?

Out here in the Northeast, ductless mini-split heating and cooling systems are all the rage. What do you think of them?

They're a difficult system to work on and god help you if a coil develops a leak but those who have them seem to like them as long as they work.

TM, does your house have natural gas or heating oil for winters?

It seems like that’s all you ever see in offices outside of the U.S. They seem to wrk pretty well based on conversations I’ve had with plant managers.

Are you referring to the "thing" where you were personally attacked by another board member and it was addressed when you rightfully got upset about it?

Or is that some other "thing" you are referring to?

Again, don't put your personal hatred on me.

Especially after I took care of the hatred another poster put on you.

I've seen three videos of non-HVAC people installing their own mini-split systems, and for a DIY person, they seem pretty straight forward. Whether all codes were followed with the install, that's a far different story.

Two of the instals were on converted Greyhound buses, now motor coaches. The 12V Mr. Cool units are very efficient and run really well on solar power, wait one might have been 120V still. The other one I saw was installed by a machinist, who definitely is NOT a carpenter, but pulled it off in his FLA shop.

I'm thinking of one for the master bedroom at our house, so my wife can continue to keep it just cooler than a meat locker in there with the window open 12 months a year, with more than just her frigid disposition...

Thanks for the info. We're going with the mini-splits in our house. There really isn't any other option for us.

My Mom's boss had some work done at his office in Oak Lawn, and on his farm in Monee and spoke highly of this company; https://www.evergreenwindow.com/

Just came home and house went from 78 when I left at 3 to 87 now. Went outside and the tube that is usually cool running from the AC is hot.

Sounds bad. When you say hot... how hot? The big tube is hot?

Yeah the one with the insulation on it that is usually cold. Not scalding hot but warm. Usually it is cold when I touch it. I think I'm fucked. This AC looks like it has been here for 20 plus years. I clean the outside every year but figure it is a matter of time.

A retired guy my dad is friends with that was from my old neighborhood is stopping by tomorrow to look at it.

You're undercharged. System is low on refrigerant. You can charge it but id plan on replacement. Chances are at that age it is r22. That shit is no longer manufactured. Get it replaced

That sucks conns. I was there last summer. Owning a home sucks at times.

I am currently looking for someone to roof our home. We had some storm damage from May. Have been around and around with our insurance and they are only agreeing to pay for half the roof.

I have no clue how some people keep a business going. I have had people not call me back, people not show up to appointments, and people ignore my phone calls.

Frustrating stuff.

I just went thru this myself. Its amazing how many companies don't want your business. Maybe its because its an insurance job and profit is limited.
