they should have left the mask thing up to businesses. that alone already covered 90% of buildings as it was. forcing it as a government mandate just pissed off half the people and turned it political.

to say this is a public emergency implies imminent danger and there has been no proof to that. when you keep switching the focus of the 'problem' you lose the credibility to your argument. the fact that they had to focus on case numbers proves they are just looking for an excuse now. people arent as stupid as liberals say they are. most people, a VERY high percentage, that get this virus survive it just fine. its not the end of the world and the over reaction has caused more damage than the virus itself.

in any case, this will suddenly die down around the first week of november. or at least when they inject a majority of people with a vaccine, but thats not going to be easy for them to do no matter how well its proven to work.

masks will never go away because a noisy minority of finger-waggers will never feel safe again. Even if they invented a fool-proof vaccine for this thing, every flu "season" we will have to listen to "mask up, it isn't for you its for everyone else blah blah blah". Some people are so scared now they will never be without one again. These unfortunate people have been taken advantage of and continue to be taken advantage of by the media who have to keep ratcheting up the terror out of fear that people will start to tune them out, so the hysteria must continue being drummed into everyone's heads. Our society is being divided by the news (opinions) being hoisted upon us and like everything else it seems there is no middle ground, you are either "with us" or "against us". We are all being pitted against each other in the name of politics. I just looked at CNNs home page. 80% of their "headlines" are straight opinion pieces being disguised as "news". But CNN said it, so it must be true. Same with Fox, but it feels worse with CNN, they stopped being a news network long ago yet hold themselves up as though they are the news standard. CNN bears a lot of responsibility for the hatred and divisiveness in the United States right now.

I think it's always good to look at historic examples. There were similar arguments regarding masking during the Spanish flu outbreak. Obviously, masking eventually went away. But there wasn't the same kind of safety culture in 1918 as what we have now. There may be some people who don't mind living in a masked society forever.

But I think the majority of maskers believe this is some temporary state and things will eventually go back to normal, not some "new normal" dystopia but the way they have lived their entire lives. They don't see that every day we live this way it becomes more and more difficult to go back.

The middle class was reeling prior to the pandemic. Now it's being absolutely wiped out. You could argue, as Nardi does, that the masks play little role in what's occurring. But I am convinced that the masks are the avatar of the "new normal" that is being imposed on us.

Joe i think you said it weeks ago in one of these threads. Masks are being treated as a talisman, something to cling to to make you feel like you are on the "right team". "Look at me, I have my mask, I'm with you through these challenging times" instead of asking why we are doing it. Why are perfectly healthy people in perfectly healthy communities walking around like this? My kids are being threatened with no school for no reason, but if we look at Facebook and many of our local friends have bought in completely to the danger, even though our community and county and region are basically untouched. We all walk around our stores masked up avoiding our neighbors and friends out of fear in an area that has proven in the last 6 months to have not been affected.
