Here’s what’s maddening. If you use Face ID (or Touch ID on older phones), you have to also have a password in case there is a problem with the system recognizing you. Ok, no problem.
If you choose not to use Face/Touch ID but just the passcode, you can set the phone to not require a re-entering of the passcode for 1, 5, or 15 minutes after turning off the screen (or you can choose immediate, where you always have to re-enter). However, if you use Face/Touch ID, you are required to choose the immediate option. So when I’m wearing my mask and close the phone, I have to enter the password each time I need to open it (because of the mask).
I have yet to see a good explanation from Apple why they cannot or do not offer a delay for requiring a passcode when using Face/Touch ID.
