A tough, bright dude, being an Air Force pilot. Got a lot of viewers who tired of Skilling's panic style. Was always friendly crossing paths at Ruffled Feathers.

I was around 190 N state for quite a bit. He seemed to always be by the rear door on Lake st puffing away.

77 for a chain smoker is still impressive. I’d think more like by 55 that would do someone in.

I think it was Dan McNeil who told a funny golf story about Jerry, who was a scratch golfer:

They were at the Western Open Pro-Am, and Jerry was playing great. A pro with a British accent asked (and I'll switch to Beardown stlye):

Pro: Who's that guy?
Local golfer: The Weatherman.
Pro: Why do they call him The Weatherman--because "he makes it rain?"
Local golfer: No, he's literally the weatherman on the local news.

Mac told a story one time that he was playing golf in a foursome with Taft, and they counted up the ex wives all of them had. I think the total was like 9 or 10, and Mac only had one

"Make it Rain" is slang for "making money, making things happen, kicking ass."

So the British guy thought it was a nickname, but it was actually his occupation.

Giangreco told a great story a couple years back about getting ready for the 10pm news and they were going to commercial and supposed to do a weather tease, but Taft wasn't there... so the commercial starts and people start running around trying to find him. He was in the weather area of the office, but had fallen asleep and the glass doors to the wing were locked. So Giangreco started banging on the door trying to wake him up and yelling to him to get up -- IIRC, Taft wakes up and walks over to the doors and Giangreco tells him you're on in 20 seconds!

Alan Krashesky told a story today about his smoking and how he was trying to hide it from his wife... on his way home after the news, he would stop and pick up a Polish sausage or Italian beef, partially because if he was eating, he wouldn't be smoking, and then secondarily hoping that being enclosed in a car with the odor of the meat might take away some of the smoke smell. One time he gets home in the drive, but realizes he still stinks of smoke, so he took the beef wrapper, rubbed his hands in the grease, and started rubbing it all over his face and mouth to try to help cover up the smell.

I actually saw him a couple of times standing in a doorway on Lake Street, just outside their studio, smoking.

Always liked Taft.

He was the backup to Steve Deschler originally. Then became the main guy.

Sad to hear this. Didn't know he retired.

I cant get over Cheryl Scott's legs though.

Enjoyed watching the newscast that night with Burton and Scott reminiscing about him.
