pretty good! I liked it! I like that the lead isn't some hollywood hunk or a guy w/ movie star looks. he looks like an ordinary guy. its set in 1931 which was also a nice surprise since the tv show was in the 50s.

looks like it got big ratings for hbo too.

Just realized the judge is Max Headroom himself! Great episode tonight after a lackluster last 2 weeks.

Many years ago, I was visiting my grandparents down in Florida for a week and a half (parents wanted a break during the summer, so we did this almost every year as a kid) and anyway, they would watch all these old time reruns and we didn't have much of a choice in the matter, so we would watch whatever they were watching. Big Perry Mason fans so we watched those a lot. I am pretty sure this was 1988 because I remember the Olympics were going on and we went to McDonalds and you could peel a label off your fries or Big Mac or whatever and it would have a sport on it, and I think if the Americans medaled in that sport, you would win the prize on it (which was usually like a hashbrown or small fries) but anyway... I don't really remember where we were exactly in Florida, but it wasn't Miami, it was somewhere more north.

My grandmother was retired and volunteered at the church they attended as a secretary type position, but she only worked 3 to 4 days a week, so on her days off she would take us places (and I think when we visited that was down to about 2 days a week where we would go to the church with her and just play in the gym.) So this day she decides that we are going to go to the book store to buy some books to read while we are there, and I am about 12 years old so I can start to read something a little bit more in depth than the Dr. Seuss and Berenstein Bears stuff they had in the closet at home.

So I am looking through the teenager section for a book that interests me while my grandmother is helping my younger sister over in the more youthful area. I get kind of bored looking at all these book titles, so I look up and kind of scan the store to see where they are at. As I am looking, I see none other than Raymond Burr looking at books. I completely recognize him from the show, even though he is much older now, and he is in color, but I know that is him. I am so excited, I really want to meet him, but I don't want to be like too much for him to handle. So I think, I'll just go over towards where he is and look at the books next to him. So he is over in the American History section, and I pick up some book and start scanning it over and I'm trying to pretend like I am looking at the book, but I am trying to look at him to see if it is really Raymond Burr now that I am a little bit closer. I want to say something to him, but don't really know what to say because I'm kind of nervous being next to a major TV star. So I guess I was a bit awkward and he turned a little and looked at me and said, "It is nice to see a young man interested in literature." Raymond gave me a compliment!

So I turn to Raymond and I am like super giddy and I say "Yeah, I like literature, I like TV, I like lawyers.." and I realize I am sort of babbling on, and I get a little self conscious and I can feel my throat tightening up and getting dry and I am overwhelmed by this experience and feel almost like an out of body experience. I had never felt such a feeling before. But it was at that moment when I looked at him, now that he had turned to face me that I realized this was not Raymond Burr. It was just some old guy talking to a 12 year old who was perusing tomes dedicated to the history of this great country but intended for adults.

Meanwhile my grandmother has been looking for me, finds me and yells at me for leaving the teenager section that I was in. If I remember correctly, I was banned from watching TV that night and had to read the stupid teenager book I got about a wild horse that roamed about and some teenager was the only one to tame it. I can say for sure that ever since that incident, not a day goes by where I don't think about that old man and how much I hate his fucking guts.

HBO and Showtime are really starting to lose me. I'm so bummed at how bad Billions was this season. Is Perry Mason any good? I keep hearing it's nothing special.

So far I like the series but missed the last episode. I like the part that Della plays in the series.

It's a Norm MacDonald bit. He just changed Andy Griffith into Raymond Burr.

I haven't seen any of the new show, but this thread caused me to look up Raymond Burr- never knew he was gay. I guess his career/stardom was before I was aware such a lifestyle even existed. I know many of the plots center around the damsel in distress theme, but I don't remember any overt sexuality with Mr. Mason.

Looked at his Wikipedia film credits.. growing up there were so many Perry Mason TV movies I thought it was a television series. Not sure I watched any of them, have seen most of this series.

Burger in this series plays an assistant and ambitious DA who is sweet on the lesbian Della and is helping Della help Mason win his first case. Its a pretty good twist on things I think.

Wait a sec. I watched a couple episodes and Perry wasn't even a lawyer. So I opted out. He becomes a lawyer? How does he have time with all the drinking and smoking?

He interred so to speak with the Lithgow guy and just had to pass the law exam to get his license. He got it and it is he who is defending the woman whose baby got kidnapped and "murdered".

Does he say to witnesses, "And isn't it true...." incessantly like Raymond Burr? I was forced to watch that show because there was one TV. The joke was "Burger has got him his time"

No, he is a completely different type guy as Mason than Burr was. He is a street fighter. A combat veteran whose service still affects him. I just like the series a lot. Burr couldn't do what this Mason does.

I really enjoy the actor who is playing mason. never seen him in anything before but he's doing a terffic job. And his #2, that actor, whatever his name is, he's just awesome in roles he has to play as someone in the past. he was really good in boardwalk empire too.

it was an ok ending.

the first 5 min were great until we realize it was a fantasy. that was pretty cheap.

sort of too tidy how they closed the storylines at the end, especially w/ the howard hughes part.

the guy who played perry mason was awesome. i guess he is famous for the series THE AMERICANS but i've never watched that.

the whole series could have just been another TRUE DETECTIVE series with the 1930s setting. They just used the 'PERRY MASON' name and characters but really didnt have to.

I don't think this relates to the TV show as in the TV show, Perry is already in his 40s while in this series this perry mason is already mid 40s in 1930.

I really enjoyed this series and the turnabout on all of the main characters was part of it. For example, Drake the black cop turned investigator for Mason gets contrasted with probably one of the whitest characters on TV back in the Burr days. Della as a lesbian couldn't be more different than Della as the straight laced prim assistant. And of course, Mason himself as a hard drinking, chain smoking, street brawler versus the ever so straight TV lawyer. I thought it was really creative writing throughout.

I also loved the end when the murderer cop got offed the way he did. Good shit.

I was about to post this same thing last night but was afraid it wasn't going to be PC. But yes, I noticed that too on how the characters from the tv show they really redid to more of today's times.

Acting was superb. I dont think there was one character that didnt sell me they were from 1930.

Look man. Don't worry about shit not being PC. Let things fly as you see them. Be yourself and don't take shit from anyone that you disagree with. But argue your points and don't just shuck and jive and then get pissed off when you are called on it. There are some real assholes on this board and fucking hypocrites too. They all know they are assholes but don't give a shit because they can't be "touched" by the people they insult.

Perry did his fair share of drinking and smoking back in the day.
