Nas made a good point once here. He said the murders only are happening in like 2-3 bad neighborhoods that every city has. Not like this is occurring city wide.

I'm thinking that is still true.

Depends on what you mean by "records". Monthly maybe but I don't think we are on pace to set a yearly record.

They are up because black people in this city are poor and unemployed. Particularly young black people. That occurred long before Covid. No one bothered to pay attention to it and now it is here and everyone acts as if just came out of nowhere. It didn't. This has been building for awhile.

Honestly, the media has paid a lot of attention to Chicago specific murders especially as they fell in NYC and LA. The Trib is always running articles on the problem.

It bothers me greatly what is going on in the city. Many of us care, and education has been a big interest of mine on these boards over the years, which I feel is the only realistic way to improve the lot of large numbers in the lower economic strata.

Drugs and gangs are prevalent in all poor communities across the country, but the gun violence you see in some parts of Chicago don't exist in most poor communities.

No one cares about actually stopping it. That's my point. There is an economic component to all of it. When I see that then I will know that people care. This particular group of people has been displaced from mainstream society for generations now.
Even with Black Lives Matters there is displaced emphasis. I think their focus should be elsewhere and I said it about 4 years ago.

And if it is all about corona then shouldn't the other cities nationwide be experiencing a similar spike in the #of murders? It seems as if its primarily Chicago if you pay attention to news accounts.

That was my original question on page 5. Other big cities are seeing a spike in murders.

Were inmates from cook county released in May and June because of Covid fears?

There have been a number of gang leaders that were released from the penitentiary this year. They were scheduled to be released as part of prison reform. Some of them have gotten out and are now trying to reestablish their "turf". Their efforts at reestablishing turf is being met with resistance from the younger brood of gang member.
That's where some of this is stemming from.

GDs vs. BDs is how someone close to me described it.

I'd love to take quotes from Lightfoot, take off the attribution and play the game "Who Said It: Daley, Emmanuel or Lightfoot" with the average voter in the street.

Not so much reform in prisons then .

And they'd be correct. If its West Side then the VLs are in the mix too. One of my former students was gunned down over it 2 weeks ago. There was a bit of a national tie in to this as well.

And I know that you remember 32-34 years ago when Daley and the U.S. Attorney's office led the fool's parade on largely b.s. grandstanding charges that led to record level bloodbaths led by the young guys trying to grab the "crown".

And how they were told NOT to go with the made for tv bullshit, since what happened, would happen.

Yeah I remember it well. 96-97 when they indicted the 37 board members. The one who scurried to Wisconsin I actually attended high school with.

The killer part (no pun intended) is that it was all politically motivated. They cracked down because they were becoming political. Legitimately political. Gator ran for Aldermen and that put a scare into certain people and that's when the crackdowns occurred.

When there was more structure there were still problems (murders) but the killings were relegated primarily to other gang members. Few placed much value on their deaths hate to say. When you have innocent children being killed and groups running into crowds just shooting people then you will attract more attention and thats what you are seeing now.

Oh yeah 32-34 was the major purge of the El Rukn Generals. Yeah I remember that too. They too became decentralized with many of the younger members reverting back to Stones. They too were known for having more structure. FWIW.

I would disagree with that. It seems like its spreading out. There are some neighborhoods that you still see the bulk of shootings but I remember when a suburban shooting was kind of a big deal. It really isnt anymore.

If the same type of money was involved it might be easier to fathom but it really isn't.

Police are investigating a Thursday afternoon home invasion at the Presidential Towers high-rise complex, 575 West Madison, in the West Loop.

The offender followed a 22-year-old man from an elevator to the victim’s 28th-floor unit and then forced his way inside around 2:56 p.m., according to Sgt. Rocco Alioto, a CPD spokesperson.

Once inside the apartment, the offender demanded property from the man and got away with the victim’s MacBook, PlayStation 4, and other valuables, a CPD report said.

The offender used one of the victim’s credit card at a liquor store on the 800 block of South Wabash shortly after the home invasion, according to the report.

Surveillance images show the suspect to be a Black male in his 30’s who carried a Nike book bag and wore a tight white shirt, baggy white pants, a blue face mask, and a white baseball hat. He has a dollar sign tattoo on his face, the victim said.

Alioto said the victim was not injured. Area Three detectives are investigating.

Woman attacked, sexually assaulted in lakefront tunnel, police say

https://cwbchicago.com/2020/08/woman-at ... oFsN6IcxOg

A 35-year-old Uptown woman was attacked with a bottle and sexually assaulted as she walked through a pedestrian tunnel near the lakefront early Saturday, according to police.

The man reportedly approached the victim and grabbed a bottle from her hand as she walked through the tunnel east of Margate Park, 4921 North Marine Drive, around 12:15 a.m.

He then struck her in the head with the bottle and sexually assaulted her before she managed to fight him off, said Officer Michael Carroll, a CPD spokesperson.

The offender fled the scene and remains at large, Carroll said. Meanwhile, the woman ran to her nearby apartment and called police.

An ambulance transported her to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where she is listed in fair condition with a head injury.

Police evidence technicians recovered a broken bottle near the tunnel. Area Three detectives are investigating.

Red Line bullshit recently:

https://cwbchicago.com/2020/08/9-men-ro ... jEnikKXLxM

Nine teenagers and men robbed a CTA passenger on the Red Line downtown Tuesday afternoon, police said. No arrests have been made. The mugging is the latest in a series of hold-ups on the train line since last week.

At 10:35 a.m. yesterday, nine offenders between the ages of 15 and 25 surrounded the victim on a Red Line train near the Jackson Station, 230 South State, according to Officer Hector Alfaro, a CPD spokesperson.

The victim, age 30, told police the men took his wallet and then chased him up the escalator. But, the offenders returned to the platform and boarded a northbound train to escape, the man said.

No descriptions of the offenders were released.

Then, shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, a woman was robbed of her phone on a train near the Lake Red Line station. The offender exited at Lake and fled southbound on the platform toward Randolph, according to a CPD report.

That robber is described as a slim Black male in his early- to mid-20’s who stands about 6-feet tall and wore a white t-shirt with dark jeans.

At least three other robberies have been reported on the Red Line downtown recently:

Three men robbed a woman on a train at Clark-Division around 10:40 p.m. Saturday, August 1. The robbers fled through the LaSalle Street exit, the victim said.
Four men wearing hoodies battered a man and stole $400 cash at the Roosevelt Red Line station around 12:20 a.m. Friday, July 31. The offenders reportedly fled on a southbound train.
Three or four men battered and robbed a man at the Roosevelt Red Line around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28. Those robbers fled on a northbound train, according to the victim. One of the suspects in this case is a Black male who has twists in his hair and a cross-shaped tattoo near his eye. He’s 25- to 30-years-old, 5’6” tall, and wore a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes, the victims said.

Those cases are the perfect reason to eliminate the police department in Chicago according to Dem. leaders.
