Question: Are you going to live the rest of your life in Illinois? My parents did--they lived and died here. And on my Mom's side, her parents before her.

I live in the burbs, and was planning on moving into a condo in Chicago when I retire in 10 years or so. That is off the table--prices, crime, taxes--I'm out of here.

And while I'm not wealthy, I have several friends that are "country club" guys. ALL of them are leaving. They ALL have a plan B--Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennesse, North Carolina, Texas. The real estate prices in Hinsdale and Western Springs will plummet when all these guys leave, and they are starting to "work from" their second homes (remote working makes this possible).

A North shore liberal that I work with recently moved to his condo in Miami to establish residency and avoid Pritzger's desired progressive income tax. Ironic that he voted for JB, but then abandons the state to avoid the consequences.

Curious as to who thinks they will be living in Illinois in their 60s and beyond?

i thought many times about moving back then all the taxes and corruption discourage me. I would feel most comfortable there than anywhere else but these fucker politicians have really screwed it for everyone.

I can't believe how people have allowed to get fucked in the *** by these scumbags. I guess it was slow and deliberate that nobody noticed.

It's been a slow-motion train wreck by design. Put off the tough financial decisions by kicking the can down the road, and we're close to the point where the bill comes due.

I said “FUCK, no” 2 1/2 years ago. Not retired, but sure as hell not going back when I do.

If I make it to retirement age I probably will. Depends on what family is alive at that point and where they are. My parents are staying after my dad retires in two years.

I already have my exit plan with my Wisconsin home. If work from home sticks, I’ll be out of here much sooner than the original plan. If that progressive tax passes, I am definitely establishing residency in WI for 2021. Ironically, WI is not much better on the income tax, but the property and sales taxes are much lower. In addition, it is more about trajectory as WI has 100% funded pensions and a stable operating environment. So the future is more assured.

The direction of Illinois is obvious to all. Anyone with upper middle class incomes should be planning the escape.

My mom stayed in Illinois. But her mom, her two brothers and one sister went to FL. Her other sister is in AZ.

All but one of my six siblings have stayed in IL.

Not only is it getting easier to imagine retiring in another state, but now it's starting to feel like another country might be the way to go, which used to be unfathomable.

what other countries? Ive had friends retire to Costa Rica and Philippines.

Hate to say it and it's not going to be PC but i'm scared retiring to another country as i've heard some bad stories about what they do to gringo's.

A buddy of mine did a similar thing a few years ago. He retired to a place in North Dakota but has a place in Lake Tahoe, Nevada where they spend their winters.

Is he permanently moving to FL? Otherwise it’s more complicated than just be a FL resident to avoid another state’s taxes.

If you live in Florida for 6 months and 1 day, you can claim residency. Shouldn't that take care of it?

I haven't left yet so I'm probably here for life. If we could just have really cold weather without snow, I would be 100% on staying. Now I'm probably around 70%.

My 4 winters in southwest Montana tells me I’d rather winter there than here. Still... hard to imagine moving away.

Yes. If I’m feeling feisty I’ll move from Cook to DuPage.

its the food. that is one reason why i keep considering moving back. once you move out you don't realize how shitty most places are when it comes to restaurants and good food. maybe a handful of cities if that in N.America can claim to be great food cities. Chicago is one of them.

People have been retiring to warmer climates for decades. This isn't some great social statement or shift. There are entire communities in Florida and Arizona that are ex pat Chicagoans, New Yorkers, etc.

You have next to no chance of crime affecting you directly here and it isn't decreased by much moving elsewhere, unless you move to somewhere remote.

Corruption happens everywhere. I laughed at guys like Christie talking about "chicago political corruption" when he ran for president...as a guy from NJ. If you think its only big cities, you really are not paying attention. You can go to innumerable towns across this country and find a potentate whose family is living from the public trust.

Dennis, with two houses and a basement filled with gold coins that he swims in each night is going to tell us with a straight face that he is moving to avoid 5-10K a year in property taxes.

I don't deny anyone, especially in retirement, seeking his own personal heaven. However, be honest about what you are doing. You want warm weather and the comfort of homogeny in your old age. There is nothing wrong with that. My guess is that you will set up shop and soon find something about that place to bitch about as well but at least you won't slip on the ice and break your hip. Hawaii lives in Hawaii and that still isn't good enough

My guess for me is that life will retire me before work does. That retirement plan ain't exactly attractive either so who am I to poke holes in other plans. I love to travel. I also love to come home to this city and all it has to offer. Maybe that changes if my kids and friends disperse.

That's my understanding. Keep both residences, but stay 184 days in FL, and you don't pay Illinois taxes. Instant raise.

because it's too expensive. not as corrupt as chicago but too expensive when you're getting old. and nobody gives a shit about old people.

i've been living since April in the bay area w/ my son. My son is royally fucked if he continues to live here. no way he can afford a house and basically rent is where half his income goes.

because of his situation and hgh cost of living, i actually told him to move to chicago. it's still expensive but coming from the bay area to chicago will be at least some kind of relief economically for him. If that happens, I wouldn't mind coming along at least for summers.

yes.....what a diabolical web i have planned.....

"I'm going to do something, someday" isn't exactly a plan
