Coming from another thread

I’ve seen a lot of them but not close to all obviously, especially the pre-1990 ones.

Fury is the best war movie I have ever seen. Since I have seen that it has not changed.

Hurt Locker is probably a close second but is a decided 2nd. Maybe Jarhead, Deer Hunter, Saving Private Ryan would round out my top 5 but I’d have to think more about that.

Saving Private Ryan is probably the best in terms of conveying the horrors of war.

Band of Brothers (I know, not technically a movie) was probably my favorite overall.

Not movies but yeah, Band of Brothers and The Pacific benefit from getting more than 2-3 hours to tell a story.

Band of brothers doesn’t count. Either does Generation Kill which imo was superior, but probably because of our generational differences.

I think it’s a tough case to make that Saving Private Ryan conveys the horror of war more than Fury. I would very much disagree with that assessment.

I re-watched Dunkirk recently and found a lot to love about it. Best ever? Nah, but it'll go down as one of the greats. That airy quality about it, the fact that it grants so much space just gives it a great feel. The ending almost ruins it entirely though, the Spitfire losing its engine yet some maneuvering and gaining elevation? I dont know why Nolan went for that.

Nothing is more epic than Lawrence of Arabia. Though Battle of Britain and A Bridge Too Far definitely come close, Lawrence of Arabia is just the better film though. Battle of Britain deserves to be mentioned as more than an aside though, the score is particularly awesome and it has really set the stage for how all aerial combat (including sci-fi space combat) scenes have been filmed ever since.

Obviously Black Hawk Down and Letters From Iwo Jima deserve mention.

But at the end of the day I cant pick between Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and Zulu. Those are the mountaintop as far as I'm concerned.

Oh yeah, Das Boot. Even if it takes all day to watch it, maybe when winter rolls around I'll line that one up for the first time in a long time.

I haven’t see Dunkirk yet and don’t really have a reason as I’ve been meaning to. Might knock that out tomorrow after the Sox double header.

Saving Private Ryan is really only good at the beginning and at the end. Lotta dumb moments on their odyssey through Normandy and uh, the Battle of Ramelle never happened. Ramelle the town actually doesn't exist, its fictional. There was no SS counterattack against the paratroopers to hold some bridge and breakout notoriously was tough for the allies to achieve, certainly didn't occur forty-eight hours after the landings at Omaha.

Fury was a fun movie and certainly better than Saving Private Ryan.

Bridge on the river Kwai. Was the best I have seen. Usually not big on older shit but this one was good.

As is often the case, the music puts it over the top.

It's subtle, but I love Crowe's facial expression before the battle (after he runs his hands through the reeds) as his peaceful look turns serious.

Man Black Hawk Down had such potential. Even as it is it deserves an honorable mention but Josh Harnett absolutely ruined that movie. Eric Bana did his best to save it and he really almost did.

I never really considered Gladiator a war movie but of course it is by the definition I guess.

Fuck it, put that up there with Fury, I’d have to decide. Gladiator is one of the best movies of all time as well. Fury is probably better though.

I dont think Gladiator is really a war movie, it has some war scenes but the main storyline has nothing to do with the war against the Germanics or really any sort of civil war in Rome itself.

That’s why I didn’t consider it but if we are stretching the definitions of war movies I’ll allow i

I really love Juaqin Phoenix or however his name is spelled but that was one of his worst performances. If he does that movie justice it’s an all time legend movie.

I saw Master and Commander in theatres while I was high as fuck in high school. I was bored as hell and remembered hating it.

I don’t necessarily trust that judgement. I saw it on Hulu recently while flipping for options and plan on giving it another shot soon. I don’t really remember anything about it.

1. We Were Soldiers: Most accurate Vietnam war movie ever made.

2. American Sniper: Another True story and well acted. Also, like We Were Soldiers, told a great story about the impact of war on the people a soldier leaves behind.

3. 13 Hours: A true story of what really happened to the heroes of Benghazi.

4. Saving Private Ryan: The first half hour should be required viewing for anyone who wonders why the folks that landed at Normandy are considered to be so brave.

5. Braveheart: I just loved the movie although the story was embellished but the job it did illustrating what war was actually like before guns and bullets took it over.

Its tight as hell. Like Jurassic Park or Jaws where every scene is important and done masterfully. The commentaries it has are simple and surface level, but there's a profoundness to that too.

A lot of what I think you love about Fury you will love about Master and Commander. Its about the people caught up in these great events and how they navigate the choices they have to make with regards to their duty.

I don’t talk about movies too much with friends so it’s not like I’ve had a lot of Fury discussions but this opinion surprises me. Fury is without a doubt one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and THE best war movie I have ever seen.

Compare Saving Private Ryan and how that ensemble was handled compared to Fury. There was just something off with the writing. The cast was great and deserved a better script and director (who was the same guy I think). The whole scene with the family was the writer trying to say we were as bad as the Nazi's IMO. I thought there was going to be a rape and then Walking Dead guy starts licking eggs. I wanted more tank battles and less rape tension/egg licking.

That’s why it’s such a great war movie brother. War isn’t good vs evil. It’s messy. Tom Hanks isn’t the guy you want to depict war.

I wouldn’t think Brad Pitt or Shia Lebouf would be either but they fucking nailed it. So did the dude from Walking Dead who I think of as a That Guy but can never remember his name. He was the perfect soldier in war depiction.

I saw them both but you’re right in that I saw the only part of the movie that was memorable.
