got to go with Full Metal Jacket for me

Full Metal Jacket is by far the best first 45 minutes of any movie then it tails off. The last half definitely takes a top one or two to a top ten.

The first half isn’t a war movie. It’s a psychological movie set in a boot camp. The second half the movie is literally just garbage filmmaking that can be completely discarded. It’s not a war movie, and it’s certainly not a great war movie in any way.

Its a shame they didn't have CGI when Patton was made. The battles look a little sparse...

Tora! Tora! Tora! was really good if you don't want to read a book about Pearl Harbor but still want to know what happened.

Das Boot is excellent except for the lazy ending.

Saving Private Ryan is probably the best overall.

It seems most war movies have great moments (like Apocalypse Now) but can't sustain the greatness thru the entire film.

1. We Were Soldiers: Most accurate Vietnam war movie ever made.

2. American Sniper: Another True story and well acted. Also, like We Were Soldiers, told a great story about the impact of war on the people a soldier leaves behind.

3. 13 Hours: A true story of what really happened to the heroes of Benghazi.

4. Saving Private Ryan: The first half hour should be required viewing for anyone who wonders why the folks that landed at Normandy are considered to be so brave.

5. Braveheart: I just loved the movie although the story was embellished but the job it did illustrating what war was actually like before guns and bullets took it over.

I've actually never seen We Were Soldiers but the rest of these were pretty bad. The exception is Saving Private Ryan, which is an OK film but is ridiculously overrated.

Couldn't disagree more tbh with this list.

Well they were just an accessory to the story of the main character. Obviously its a little jarring to see American tanks going to war against other American tanks (that are just painted beige with the iron cross on their turrets).

Probably about to rack out but just know that “Best job I ever had” in Fury sums up every theme I’ve ever seen in real life about the misery and pride of serving in the military from those who were there. I wasn’t one who served in combat but I’m lucky enough to be good friends with many who have.

Generation War is outstanding. It’s on Amazon Prime. That ranks right up there with Band of Brothers as the best war movie/miniseries I’ve seen. We were Soldiers, Letters from Iwo Jima, and SPR are also on the short list.

I thought that this was not a very good movie because it attempted to make it an indictment against the military, just like Platoon and a few other movies of similar themes. I just think that the directors in these movies have a political position that they want to explode on teh screen and this is what results. As in a mentally retarded fool killing a semi-sadistic DI.

Not claiming it’s the best ever, but I always thought “casualties of war” with Michael j fox and Sean penn was a very underrated Vietnam war movie.

We were Soldiers was pretty badass.

But seeing Patton at the United States Military Academy for the first time was as memorable as it can get.

Both were trying to portray a political opinion not based on anything factual. If you agree with the politics of it, you will like the movies, at least Platoon because it was well acted over-all. Apocalypse Now was stupid in all aspects. A terrible movie.

Another movie that I really enjoyed watching was Midway. The air combat depicted was terrific for the technology of the time and the story itself was excellent.

Midway wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Still average.

Nah. Was factual and the combat scenes were excellent.

Wait are we talking about the one that came out last year? That was dreadful.

It was much worse than wasn't good.

There wasn't a component of the movie that didn't suck.

The acting was ridiculous. Characters were written like they were a parody of a serious war movie. All they needed was the guy named Tex.

Yeah. He'd know. All movies take some poetic license with how they get written and acted. But movies like We Were Soldiers, Thirteen Hours, American Sniper, and Midway go to great lengths to provide true stories of what actually happens in war and what actually happened historically. This is why I detest movies like Full Metal Jacket and Platoon that attempt to present a false narrative and lie about what actually happens in war and the men who fight in it.
