After a great April, the Sox quickly came back to life in May and were a mediocre ball club for the remainder of the '16 season. The day Hahn traded Tatis for Shields, the Sox had lost 17 of their last 23 games. Six months later he finally decides to start a rebuild -- trading Sale and Eaton.

Kenny's final move was Shields.

My bad. My point is that it's rare to sign a guy an international guy at 15 and then trade him before he plays a minor league game for you.

On top of that, it's not a good look for Kenny/Hahn/organization to trade that prospect at a time when you've lost 17 of your last 23 games, sitting at .500, thinking Shields is the missing piece to make a run at the division and then in the playoffs.......ultimately finish 4th in the division, 16.5 games back of the far superior Indians roster, and decide that winter "Okay, I think now's a good time. Let's go ahead and push that rebuild button."

That fucking team was 23-10 and cruising until they shit themselves in Texas. That was the end.

Agreed.

It was a desperate move from a desperate man.

With this steal, @tatis_jr

I take my post back. That thought was bad, but let's not forget Keyser had Gordon Beckham going in the hall of fame after like 10 games.

Adam Engel as well.

He also loved Erik Johnson, and hated Madrigal.

Selig retired 6 months before the trade, Shields was getting beaten like a drum in the biggest ballpark in MLB..even a blind man could see he sucked.

But really hoping so for Kennys sake.

I think we all agree that it was dumb in hindsight. But at the same time, I'm cool with where they are now. We'll never know, but I'm not sure they'd be as set-up for the next few years if they'd kept FTJr.

If they didn't have EH or LR, we'd feel a bit different about this.

Phil knows what he's doing. He knows Tatis will never fail to get under our skin. Only a championship will change that.

Still remember that trade like it was yesterday. The media, led by Levine, gave it the thumbs up.

I didn't want Shields even if we got him for NOTHING.

Feel the same about Encarnacion. Didn't want him. Didn't care if he somehow got paid the minimum. He takes up space in a rebuilding year.

It is really hard to project what a late round 19 year old kid will be. It was more luck than skill for he Padres.

Actually, he was 17 when signed. So there was time to evaluate. SD evaluated. But that wasn't really my point. All you need is a pair of eyes. All you needed was a pair of eyes with Fulmer and also Burger.

Obviously, Hahn has cleaned things up. I smell Kenny in the Encarnacion signing. What was the point of that? We have DH's falling out of our asses.

What we do not know, any of us, what the EE signing meant to the development of Eloy. When you look at their hitting styles, they have a lot fo similarity. As for Burger, he got hurt bad. That stuff happens. This guy will hit for someone. Think of it this way. If Vaughn doesn't make it or gets traded(yeah, that could happen also, Burger is a viable possibility at first or DH.

Burger doesn't have an arm. I mean he does, but it's useless. They drafted a DH. He throws humpback liners from 3rd.

He's not going to play 3B for the White Sox and no one pencils him in there with Moncada on the team. He will be a first baseman/DH if he makes it to the majors with the Sox or as an 3B/1B/DH if he gets traded to someone else. And his scouting reports tell a different story from the one you reported. They described him as having good feet and an average arm and range. I know that you bag on him and that is your right but I look at the fact that he suffered a terrible injury and his over-all talent and think and hope that he makes it.

Here's the way I look at it.

Of course, shitty trade. We fucked up on this one.

But we're fine anyway. And we only have so much money to sign all these great players. Somebody would have to go. So it might have been Tatis anyway. The one that had to go.

We weren't gonna win the WS with him the last 2 years anyway.

Tatis would probably still be in the minors on the South Side unless he signed a long term deal that would severely under pay him if he ends up being above average.

The Cubs comp is trading Josh Donaldson for Harden. You trade teenagers 5-6 years away from the MLB for guys who can help you win now. It happens

Yes. The problem was getting Shields, not trading a lottery ticket.

Dontrelle Willis for Antonio 6 Fingers
Chris Archer for Matt Garza

Preller screwing teams by providing false medicals is the biggest problem with the deal followed closely by Reinsdorf not picking up more of Shields salary in order to keep Tatis off the table. Particularly galling since they have made nothing but money during this rebuild.

Comparing a generational talent like Tatis to the likes of Willis, Donaldson, and Archer is idiotic.

He wasn't a generational talent when he was traded, and there was no way to predict that he would become one.

Like Frank, I was less angry that they traded a lottery ticket than that they did it for a broken down vet while Kenny kept chasing the dragon.

Donaldson has won an MVP and finished top 11 in 5 seasons including last year. He's been pretty great.

He's already got a higher career WAR than some Hall of Famers

Tatis looks like he could be a monster, but he has played in a grand total of 114 MLB games. It's still far too early to send him to Cooperstown.
