People really overrated LaStella last year

I've always pictured this scenario playing out in the future:

Person A: Hey, remember when the Cubs won that World Series 20 years ago?
Person B: Yeah...
Person A: I got to go on to the field and hand over one of the rings!!
Person B: Cool! Who did you give it to?
Person A: Tommy LaStella.
Person B: Who?
Person A: LaStella -- he was their utility guy.
Person B: Ohhhhh ok, I think I remember him now. Yeah, sounds cool. Pardon me for a second.

If you were going to make a ranking of expendable position players his name would have been near the top of the list.

I really enjoyed the reliable bat off the bench, but this team has a glut of quality young players that need more at bats.

It's a loss, but not a huge loss.

Yep. Big time fuck up. Lastella would sure look good right now and was popular with his teammates too. Stupid.

when he was here i always thought maddon did not use him to his best ability.

he treated him just like some scrub pinch hitter.

last year he had a breakout year.

and now maddon manages the angels and he's traded.

Maddon simply doesn't trust his defense at 2B, but both Fletcher and Simmons have missed games. He was using him at 1B as well in Anaheim when Pujols would DH or sit.

Part of the reason that LaStella was traded was that he couldn't play SS and Russell was at best going to miss the first six weeks of the year. In that regard, the trade made sense, but they fucked it up by not being able to do better than Descalso. And as a result they had to eventually start Nico's clock a year early and then didn't have LaStella to DH this year.

If LaStella could learn to play a passable LF, it would go a long way for him.
