Quote:
But the players themselves don’t hold all the cards. Americans have been falling progressively out of love with the NBA, for instance, and the pandemic has only exacerbated an already difficult situation. TV ratings, mediocre after the season restarted, are down collectively by 40 percent on the TNT network, and 20 percent on ESPN, since their peak nearly a decade ago. Even more troubling is that the league’s network TV premium broadcasts ratings on ABC are off by 45 percent, what a former public relations executive for the NBA describes as a “cratering” of viewership.

I like the NBA, but it is decidedly my fourth sport. I haven’t been fond of the move towards a three point shooting track meet. There is just not enough time in a day to consume it as much as I would like. I find myself lost in the NBA arguments on the board as I lack enough screen time to engage with LTG, FF, shakes and others who have strong opinions on the subject.

The same teams being good every year for ten years was lethal. Especially since LeBron is not Jordan, no matter how much the media tries to make him out to be perfect.

Plastering the name of an organization on your courts that will soon be classified as a Domestic Terror Organization was probably a "bridge too far".

MLB did it too, and I dont think they were trying to abbreviate Major League Baseball backwards either...

The NBA just sucks. And partly that's because the Bulls and Knicks suck, but also its just lame. NBA players used to be just one step down from NFL athletes, they were tough, mean and physical. I guess the beginning of the end was the Malice at the Palace. The resultant rule-changes that were just as much about driving scoring up as they were about leaving no place in the league for "enforcer" types.

Now we have players dressing like women and bickering on social media all day. You've got Kevin Durant embarrassing the hell out of himself. Then there's this idea that its really just a club for the players and once you've "made it" and start getting veteran contracts the entire reason to compete is gone, and these guys just switch teams for the sake of it.

Its a broken league. Far more broken than even MLB, which has spent ten years trying to destroy the beauty of the game.

That is when I started to lose interest. I miss the emphasis on the post-up and mid-range games.

There was a story in The Athletic 2 weeks ago that said the NBA had a 45% ratings decline since 2012. I follow the NBA sporadically and had no idea it was that bad. That is a huge decline as the article said the NFL and MLB were flat or improved slightly in that time frame.

I've said this in other threads before....my biggest problem with the NBA
- Star-driven league makes it too predictable
- The Bulls lack of competence / competitiveness.

There are other factors, but those are the 2 big ones. I know Dan Bernstein tells us we are all supposed to marvel at the dominance of stars, but that just doesn't work for me

I never really watched much beyond the Bulls, and then I lost interest in the Bulls when they hired Hoiberg. Plus I became a cord cutter around that time.

Now I still watch MLB as my primary sport, but I mostly rely on ESPN+ for other stuff so I am watching a lot more soccer (no commercials for large swaths and I can watch the next day), golf (I really like the PGA Live features holes and featured groups formats) and even some UFC non PPV.

Then again, I have aged out of the NBA's target demographic.

There is no real way to combat it but for me, the NBA was most interesting when I got to know the players through their college careers. The players came to the league with proven characters and a story line that I could love or hate. College basketball is now a year of limbo for the best players with no real embrace of their short term home. That has now carried over to the league, where the movement is just too chaotic. It also doesn't help when good players are traded not for their value but for salary relief in droves. I said it about this second season but it is really true about every season for me, it is like watching an exhibtion game. Tomorrow, they'll pick new teams and play another exhibition.

Even if it is artistically beautiful, it isn't a compelling story line.

i dont know about that.

maybe since you are all in chicago and the bulls suck the interest in NBA will naturally be down.

but rest of the country pre covid it was a real big business. the Warriors era probably was the biggest surge in NBA interest since the 90s bulls.

The b.s. line about ratings is exactly that, b.s.. Never mind that tv rights fees have been soaring over that period, plus given that they keep pointing at bubble ratings as "proof" when half the games were starting at 1,3 and 5:30 is flat out disingenuous.

And as many have pointed out, no good teams in 2 of the 3 biggest markets doesn't help.

How much, is any, of the TV money is tied to international viewership, in China in particular? Do the networks get a piece of international viewership?

I'm not watching the NBA again until they bring Derrick Rose back to be the Head Coach of the Bulls.

they're also not addressing cord cutting/streaming which is taking away a lot of traditional viewers from the NBA and affects the ratings.

That said, I do know people who stopped watching because they don't like the emphasis on liberal politics.

Are you sure about that? I've started seeing "X" amount on views on all platforms. Not NBA specific, but I've seen that in relation to golf viewership.

For me it’s just not basketball season. Once it stopped in March the season was over, I get them finishing the season, but I tuned out.

Just a little anecdotal evidence about my previous point: one of the sports stations is showing the great games of John Thompson's coaching career this week. I watched one game against St. John's from '85 and another against Pitt in '86. I know and remember a very big chunk of the 1986 Pitt basketball team and almost all of Georgetown's players. Man, I thought Jerome Lane was going to be something. I couldn't name the starting five from Duke this year (I only use them because they are probably the most visible program in the country).

they don't count illegal streams which, evidently, makes up a large % of the NBA viewer demographic.

Not sure if they even count legal streams when figuring out ratings.

This. The over-emphasis on 3 pointers combined with the Carlos Boozer-style defense makes it seem like a minor league.

I am still heartbroken over D-Rose's starfall, though.

He was better than all these other guards who get the top billing now.
