That will happen in December unless they win it all. The only person they won't try hard to trade is Heyward as he becomes a 10 and 5 guy at the end of this year.
If MLB sticks with a 16 team playoff with no meaningful benefits for a first place team, I expect that they will shed a lot of their position players and play for a 4 seed next year. The Brewers are toast, the Cardinals still have no hitting, and the Pirates are the Pirates.
I think the Marlins could pay for Rizzo to extend him and give up a young starter, he's a South Florida guy and he's the type of veteran they need as they get ready to make their run in a crazy weak NL East. And somebody in the AL or NL West will be willing to rent Bryant for a year.
You don’t have a fucking clue
Oh fuck off.
1. This division is shit. IF MLB keeps the same playoff format, do you really think that they can't get a 4 seed with 85 wins? They might even win the division (and thus a 3 seed) with 85. Why would Ricketts spend the money on an aging core just for the difference between a 4 seed and a 2 seed?
2. The Marlins are on the rise. If they are going to overpay for leadership, Rizzo is the logical choice. Either this off season, or when Rizzo becomes a free agent. If they choose not to, Rizzo will stay a Cub. It's not that complicated.
3. They wanted to move Bryant last off season and MLB fucked them over with delaying the arbitration results on Bryant's grievance. If the DH stays in the NL, the Rockies would be a perfect location for Bryant as he could play LF and otherwise rotate DH/3B. Same with Anaheim if he wants to reunite with Merlot Joe.
They thought Bryant was going to be the face of the franchise. He's clearly not. Completely agree that Rizzo is the better option to overpay. I'd overpay for Baez over Bryant at this point.
Contreras is the one wildcard here. Catchers who can hit always have value. The Cubs currently have very few movable contracts that will return value. Contreras, Bryant, and Baez....I keep Baez and deal the others for a rebuild. Clearly Theo overestimated his haul for Bryant and yes...MLB didn't help things, either.
Theo has dug himself quite a hole.
