Aggressive dementia sucks.

He had a second career as an acclaimed winemaker in California.

For someone who is considered to be one of the greatest of all time, Bill James had him ranked #6, you don't hear him talked about that much. I never saw him pitch, so I don't know if his game wasn't that flashy, he didn't play on good teams, or there is some other reason why a legend never really built up around him.

Literally wrote the book on pitching . Different era Deacon, he was a monster on the mound but yeah , not flashy. Fastball , slider , curve . Basically came into the league fully polished and dominated for a long time . Decent post career broadcaster too. Sad day for 70s era baseball fans .

Most of his career was before my time, saw him pitch for the Sox when I was 7 or 8 years old. I've heard him called " greatest Met of all time"

If your life depended on a win..you taking Doc Gooden or Tom Seaver in that game?

I’ll alway remember him for being a jerk to a young girl asking for his autograph at Sox Spring Training in Sarasota back in the day. The younger players were great though. It still seems odd but the field was surrounded by chain link fence back then so you could easily walk up behind players and chat with them. They also passed right through the crowd entering and exiting the field.

Seaver. He did it over two decades.

As I tell everyone, he shoulda won 20 in '85.

300 wins, 3600 strikeouts, under a 3 career ERA.

If the Reds had him a little earlier, they would have won 120 games.

I would take Doc if you could get 1985 Doc during that magical run. But overall the answer is Seaver

No pitcher in my memory used his leg drive for velocity better than Seaver. His legs were tree trunks and were strong as legs could be.

I could hear Doc's pitches and he was unhittable until '87-88.

Yeah, Ryan was another one. He was lean and lanky, though, and Seaver was built like a fullback. I remember at the end of a typical game, his right knee was always dirty because would drag it on his follow through. The torque he generated was tremendous.

According to Murph he was a real jerk off the field. Very pompous type. RIP.

Nolan was the first pitcher I saw always getting interviewed doing leg workouts on Universal machines. And he attributed his power to then.

i read recently that if they had used the technology today that measures pitch speed Ryan would be hitting 108 mph on the gun.

No doubt that he was a physical marvel. Hell, he was still registering 90 on the gun when his kid was playing college ball.

Yeah, when he was officially clocked at 100.8, that was when it crossed the plate. Now they measure as it comes out of the hand, which is 5-10 mph faster.

Yeah. People, especially young kids used to idolize these guys and some of these guys were assholes. Or other times, the player was simply having a shit day? When I was a kid my Dad took me outside the ramp where the players walked to get onto the field for an autograph. I asked one of my heroes, Nellie Fox, for one and he told me to get the hell away from him. My dad started to go after him and Billy Goodman intervened and gave me an autograph and told my dad, forget Fox, he's an asshole. :eye:

Biggest baseball player assholes Hall of Fame : Tom Seaver, Johnny Bench. maybe Bench has mellowed out but he was a real Caller Bob after retirement from the stories I've heard thru the years.
