Furnaces. My parents' original one lasted 40+ years. New ones have a ten year life expectancy. Yes, they are more efficient, but if you even have to buy two during the same time period, now way it catches up.

Cars. Very similar, price is WAAY up, and they go more miles total, but start to fall apart and are unfixable often in only a few years.

Cars are most certainly more expensive but the quality is considerably better. Most cars in the 70s and 80s were junk. Sure you could fix more yourself back then but you also needed to more often. Even cheap cars routinely go 100k+ miles these days without anything but routine maintenance. 40 years ago the car was rusted out and heading to the junkyard.

I agree with the cars. Particularly the safety stuff now. Even so they way outpaced inflation in my lifetime.

On a more mundane note, Taco Bell.

With respect to airlines, prices pre-COVID were pretty much what they were 30 years ago for longer trips. My first trip to Europe as an adult, I paid just under $750 for an October 1991 trip in coach. Business Class in 1997 to Europe was about $4200 for what was basically a domestic first class seat. The same seat is now called Premium Economy and it costs $950-1600 for most of the year.

I have vivid memories of the 59 79 99 menus. A taco! For 59 cents! A taco supreme! for 79 cents! A nachos supreme! For 99 cents!

Cars really have improved in terms of lifespan. There is no reason most cars cannot make it to 200k today. 30 years ago, 100k would be considered high mileage and near the end of the line.

Very true. Taco Bell pricing has historically been all over the map. In the early 80s my friends and I rarely ate there because it was too little food for too much money. Sometime in the late 80s Wendy’s came out with the .99 cent value menu and Taco Bell followed suit and their business exploded. Since then their prices have slowly creeped back up but since I’m not bagging groceries any more I hadn’t given it much thought until this thread.

Sunday dinner in college was all 59 and 79 cent items and admittingly terrible but filled me up. 2 taco supremes, 2 chillitos and two bean burritos.. sometimes mix it up with green burritos. How I weighed a massive 140 pounds I’ll never know.

YES.

Hated it when they got rid of the Taco Bell Grande decades ago, and now I read they're killing the Mexican Pizza.

House windows and doors. I bought windows five years ago from Andersen and they were expensive. Now they're mostly made out of vinyl, unless you order wood windows on the inside, which are extra expensive. If you do, you'll get the cheapest wood. While vinyl may not deteriorate as quickly, it's still a crappy material for the outside of your house. The windows I used to have were all wood, probably pine, and had aluminum storm windows that went over them. They were better, that is warmer, than the single sheet of glass for the double hungs I have now. Besides being cold, they're bad because of all the condensation of the wood from the glass not being totally sealed. I have casement windows, too, for my living room, which are a little better.

Doors are also made cheaply compared to years ago. Most of them are junk. I ordered solid White Oak doors at the same time with the windows. They're ok, but they make the panels very thin to save on materials. If you see antique doors in older houses, they're really nice. All of them were made with Mortise locks, which are great. You can't even find them now.
