Since they were on the next block, my dad sampled them once to see what all the hubbub was about. He was horrified.

Mind you, my dad and his partner had a "strip steak" on his menu for night time drunkards. It was I think $4.95 in the late 70s. His partner insisted on it, and one of the first things my dad did when he bought his partner out was to get it off the menu. He wouldnt eat it, nor would he let me eat it. He had to clip the ends of our steak knives because otherwise they'd be stolen each time.

I think that it was 6.95 by 1990, I had it a couple of times. It wasn't horrible if you didn't think it was steak.

About 7-10 years ago, buddies and were UpNorth snowmobiling, and came across a local place offering a $6.95 steak and potato dinner special. Well, gotta try it, right? Actually, wasn't all that bad. Right about then the Dragon's Milk IPA was new to the market, and they had those, also. I paid more for my beer, a 24oz'er of Dragons Milk than I did for the steak dinner. I liked the steak better than the beer.

If you do any work with the city, those were the types of places you could go to find the guy who wasn't returning your phone calls. The Loop used to have a couple of handfuls of those types of places. I don't know if there is a single one any more, where a working man could get a decent cooked meal served to you on a plate for cheap.

Dorothy used to come in with her entourage a couple of times a week when the Council was in session. Swore like a sailor and loud if she was upset about something, which she usually was.

Gene Sawyer came in almost every weekday when he was an alderman. He sat at the counter with his sister who was a bailiff at the Civic Center courts and pretty good looking in uniform in her late 30s. They were both incredibly nice people, or at least cordial. I learned that he was an engineer by original training when he found out I was going to be going to engineering school for undergrad.

Hugh Hill came in most weekdays as well. He was as orange in person as he was on TV.
