I'd guess that everyone above the age of 50 who's worked in the Loop has. And for the money, why not?

My first visit was in the late '80s before hitting up Blues Fest. Dude was standing in the doorway selling porn on VHS. I asked if he had anything on Betamax.

Since they were on the next block, my dad sampled them once to see what all the hubbub was about. He was horrified.

Mind you, my dad and his partner had a "strip steak" on his menu for night time drunkards. It was I think $4.95 in the late 70s. His partner insisted on it, and one of the first things my dad did when he bought his partner out was to get it off the menu. He wouldnt eat it, nor would he let me eat it. He had to clip the ends of our steak knives because otherwise they'd be stolen each time.

He said that he might give a Ronny's steak to a dog., if the dog had good teeth.

Ronnys is to Gibson's as a $10 crack whore is to a young Sofia Loren.

I think it was a favorite hangout for Boers back in his Sun Times days.

I think that it was 6.95 by 1990, I had it a couple of times. It wasn't horrible if you didn't think it was steak.

Or had the stomach to drown it in sauce. Plus the obligatory potato was filling. Or you were just coming off of the broke college years. (I was just reminiscing about being so broke not to be able to afford a fresh hot bag of popcorn) :eye:

About 7-10 years ago, buddies and were UpNorth snowmobiling, and came across a local place offering a $6.95 steak and potato dinner special. Well, gotta try it, right? Actually, wasn't all that bad. Right about then the Dragon's Milk IPA was new to the market, and they had those, also. I paid more for my beer, a 24oz'er of Dragons Milk than I did for the steak dinner. I liked the steak better than the beer.

You knew what you were getting into at those price points.

If you do any work with the city, those were the types of places you could go to find the guy who wasn't returning your phone calls. The Loop used to have a couple of handfuls of those types of places. I don't know if there is a single one any more, where a working man could get a decent cooked meal served to you on a plate for cheap.

For $5-6 dollars more why wouldn't you just walk a block down to Monk's Pub?

Counselor's Row. I believe it was where Sidebar is now located.

That's a low bar <shudder>

I figured you were old enough to appreciate it.

Dorothy used to come in with her entourage a couple of times a week when the Council was in session. Swore like a sailor and loud if she was upset about something, which she usually was.

Gene Sawyer came in almost every weekday when he was an alderman. He sat at the counter with his sister who was a bailiff at the Civic Center courts and pretty good looking in uniform in her late 30s. They were both incredibly nice people, or at least cordial. I learned that he was an engineer by original training when he found out I was going to be going to engineering school for undergrad.

Hugh Hill came in most weekdays as well. He was as orange in person as he was on TV.
