I have to admit I thought the lead was an odd choice.

I'm not into sci-fi that much but I thought the book was really good. There's a good movie in there if they do it right. It can't be one movie the book is too complex but it looks like they're doing 2 so that was a good decision. Its like Game of Thrones in space.

It has to be better than the first attempt.

This might be a book that doesn’t translate to the big screen.

Have all of you forgotten who is directing this movie?

If it was a motivated Jackson and del Toro that would be sick...

Maybe this guy can pull it off. Its a difficult project to be sure. If he sticks close to the source material it will probably be the most difficult thing he ever does. Just getting the script written would be tough with all the lore.

Do you think this looks good? It looks like a remake of the 80s movie with better special effects. I see nothing new or interesting. And without Toto doing the soundtrack.

to be honest the 80s movie was a bit of a bust.

It's terrible, but entertaining. Virginia Madsen was absolutely gorgeous.

What was the last good movie Peter Jackson made?

I may be wrong, but for as talented as he is I don’t think Guillermo is the right director for a movie this scale.

Denis Villenueve is as strong a candidate as your going to find for this project.

Gotta be honest.

I haven’t seen the original Dune movie.

Only skimmed through a Wikipedia about the books, and 1980s effort.

Seems like a lot of depth for one movie.

Glad they are doing two.

Plus the cast is nothing short of great.

Not a fan of Hans Zimmer?

That's why I said motivated like he was for the original Lord of the Rings. His movies since then have become bloated with the special effects IMO. With Lord of the Rings he put in a lot of effort with the script. I watched a making of documentary and they showed the office where he and his partner were writing the script. They were having to pull things from different books to get the timeline to work. Dune is similar to Lord of the Rings in that there's a lot of lore and background story going on. I never read Lord of the Rings and I read Dune like 20 years ago so I wouldn't notice if something was different but its almost always better when they stick close to the book.

I would want del Toro to produce and handle some of the visual design. The one thing Lynch got right in the original was the design. It was visually an interesting movie. I think del Toro has a lot of interesting ideas like Lynch. They're both kind of crazy.

Do you like the lead? That guy is a strange choice IMO...

Nothing better than the knife duel scene where he repeats, "I WILL Kill him!"

Fuck this movie.

Didn't need to be re-made. Kyle MacLachlan OWNED that shit.

I just think Jackson has lost the magic.

It’s like wanting your favorite rock band or hip hop artist to go back to the greatness and sound of their first album. It rarely ever happens.

If this were 2005 then I’m right there with you.

Del Toro is great no doubt, but I think he’s kind of locked himself into mid budget horror after he was told he couldn’t get $150 million to adapt “Into the Mountains of Madness” with Tom Cruise attached to star. He could be a good producer tho you’re right.

Chalamet is one of the popular trending actors in Hollywood now.

I honestly haven’t seen any of his work outside of that small role he had in the Christian Bale western a few years ago.

I also don’t know much about how the lead role is written in the books.

The original is on HBO On Demand now. Worth watching if you are interested in this one. I'm sure the soundtrack will be good. Watching the first one my ruin this though.

Villeneuve seems like the right person for this; i was left a bit underwhelmed by his "bladerunner" sequel (then again, i'm not a huge fan of the original either), but i loved "enemy".

i like that this is split into 2 halves. but since nearly everything gets the streaming series treatment, i'm wondering if that was more appropriate for something as sprawling as "Dune". you could incorporate the entire series of books that way.

I wonder if HBO looked into doing it. Dune is basically Game of Thrones in space. Hopefully the writing is up to par...to me that's going to be the biggest challenge.

On Saturday nights my kids have friends over and we get pizza and watch a movie. This week its the original Dune. They watched the trailer for the new one and I told them how crazy the original was and they want to watch it. Its kind of funny which movies go over and which ones don't with a bunch of 15-18 year old kids.

i haven't read into it but it could've been shopped around as a series. you're right, it is an extensive epic story.

well, good luck.

strange thing is, about 10 years ago you would be showing your kids stuff from the 80's and 90's that were rated R and thinking, "eh it's old, they'll be desensitized enough and it's dated."

nowadays, it's the opposite. people are so triggered by every little "microaggression" and look for things to be offended by, that i don't know...a movie like "kindergarten cop" is blacklisted.

That could be good or bad. Hopefully its not a World War Z situation where they realized they didn't have a movie and need to re-shoot the last 1/3 of the movie...

80s Dune is free on HBO. Virginia Madsen was gorgeous. Movie is fun bad.

They had to do it that way so that's a positive. Hopefully the screenwriter doesn't think he's smarter than Herbert and is content to do a good adaptation.
