I know my dad and grandpa were there on a rainy afternoon @ wrigley to see him set the rushing TD record. RIP

Sayers, Barry Sanders, Jim Brown....all better pure Running Backs. Payton was the better overall football player.

RIP Kansas Comet....definitely one of the best ever. :(

I am just old enough to remember both Butkus and Sayers getting hurt for the last time, but not old enough to remember Piccolo.

I went on a reading spree in 5th grade of "as told to" autobiographies of Black sports stars of the 60s. Sayers, Gibson, Aaron, Walt Frazier. I was a voracious reader in the pre-cable, pre-computer era, and I remember feeling cheated that I never really got to see Sayers play on TV, just highlights.

I’ve posted it here before but I caddied for Gale 20 yrs ago. He was kinda a dick all day. Turns out I lost his Masters towel after lugging him and his partners clubs for 5 hours and he was pretty pissed. He was not a good golfer.

Double-bagging. I'm impressed. Butterfield?

I was surprised at how little he was.

I remember going to the library and checking out the 1965 Bears' highlight reel. 16mm projector. Sayers and Butkus, both rookies. How the hell does that happen?!

His daughter would turn surly whenever an unsuspecting soul would ever mention him. That she was named after him didn't help.

Sayers was definitely before my time. Even most of Payton's career was before my Bears consciousness (which I would roughly align with Ditka's hiring)

Definitely feel cheated. After going on and on about Rocket Ismail when he was at ND, my oldest brother looked at me and said, "Sayers was even better, and he was a running back, too."

Damn. He seemed very lively last time I had heard him speak. 77 is too young.

R.I.P. the Kansas Comet.

I knew his son Tim really well. We actually entered Kenwood as freshman back in the day. They had a very bad father/son relationship too.

There was a period of time(before the dementia kicked in), say 10 years ago, he got really bitter..I think he even took some sideswipes at Payton if I'm not mistaken.

I remember the great ( ? ) Jack Brickhouse waxing poetically over one of Gayle's runs "He looked like a flea on a hot griddle".Papa Bear created the tear away jersey because the only way they could tackle him was by grabbing his jersey!
