I revisited the draft scouting report. They had him topping at 97. Concerns about injury as he has had a history of the shoulder.

Plan is still to make him a starter long term. That's what they drafted him for.

In a situation where he is a starter he probably throws 97. When he's going out there for just 15 pitches, you can put a bit more into it without concerning yourself with fatigue.

99-102 is quite a ways away from 94-97. Especially when you are a 6'6" lefty. Way too early, but it's possible we won the lottery with an 11th pick.

I asked a friend of mine who works as a scout how Crochet slipped to 11th and here is the answer I got. Apparently Crochet only really started heavily working on the slider and change over the last 12 months and the Covid shortened season didn't give him much of a chance to showcase it. Had he had a full college season, this kid goes top 5. Sox won the lottery.

He's a different guy when he calls games for a national audience. He dials down the smugness, stops constantly trying to demonstrate his intelligence, and just calls the game.
