Who's up next? Mitch is thankfully gone, a year too late, and Foles is a stopgap. Free agency or the draft? Do we trust Pace to find the right guy in the draft? Probably not but I don't see him being fired either.

As I wrote elsewhere KJ Costello from Miss. St. Some will say he is a system QB with Leach. He's been pretty good in a couple of systems as he also was a multi year starter at Stanford. Stanford and a starter for Leach also seem dispositive of the question of intelligence.

Jamie Newman will be the big question mark. He impressed a lot of people in leading a slug like Wake Forest to a pretty great offensive year. Then he transferred to Georgia. Then he opted out. So, who knows exactly what you have for 2021. Unfortunately, his negatives sound eerily like the ACC star QB we are about to get rid of.

of course 1, 2 and 3 seem to be set at Lawrence, Fields and Lance

Here is my guess: They are too good to get the top three but not good enough for the rest of the class in round 1.

They get another playmaker on offense in round 1.

Trask or Costello seem like the kind of guys Nagy wants. They get one of them in round 2.

None of them are ready to start on Day 1. Pace expected this in acquiring Foles, who will be the opening day starter in 2021. He will then ease into a backup in 2022.

The team is 3-0 and Foles looked good. Let's not worry about next year just yet.

Costello is the guy I want them to look seriously at in the draft. Smart and accurate with a 6'5 frame.

If he continues is able to torch SEC defenses like he did against LSU he will merit a look despite what will likely not be outstanding combine numbers.

Interesting take. Last year with a competent offense they're in the playoffs as a wild card at least. The difference was about 20 more points scored across 3-4 games, basically a field goal and safety per game. Assuming the defense stays the same and assuming Nagy can get the ppg up to around 21+ then maybe they do find themselves drafting later than you're saying. I don't think it's too much to ask of the team.

Keep drafting one until you find one. Cardinals dropped Rosen real quick and grabbed Murray. The Bears would still be fucking around with that guy playing right now.

18. Chicago Bears — QB Mac Jones, Alabama

Image

Mitchell (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky? Nope.

Nick Foles? Also no.

The Chicago Bears must give head coach Matt Nagy a chance to draft his own quarterback after the team swung big and missed big in the 2017 draft and again in the offseason. Unfortunately, the Bears are expected to win too many games to be a player for the elite quarterback prospects but could still land one of college football’s best breakout players in Mac Jones.

After replacing an injured Tua Tagovailoa last year, Jones showed remarkable improvement over the course of the season and has picked up where he left off this year with awesome downfield throwing, pocket awareness and the ability to process what the defense is doing. Jones is more than an Alabama game-manager and is the type of total-field quarterback with arm strength and accuracy to all levels the Bears so badly need.

Would be nice to have draft picks to trade up for someone better but I think we used them all to get David Montgomery.

I like Trask as of now.

Wilson from BYU is interesting, but it’s the Mountain West.

I had given up on Kellen Mond his sophomore year, but he seems to have figured it out this year. 4 year starter as well. Could prolly get him late first or second round right now.

I don't trust Pace, Love to get a Trey Lance in the 2nd round.

Yeah, I’m hoping the Packers can get JaMarr Chase in the 2nd round too.

I think Lance is the 5th QB to go.

I really wanted another season out of Trey Lance to see if he’s not a one year wonder.

We got fucked with Mitch that way.

Lance’s one year was special tho.

That is why it helps us, if he had another season now..he goes top 10 and 3rd qb3 taken behind Laurence and Fields.

He won’t be later than 4th and he’s without a doubt going in the top 15-20 of the draft. Probably top 7-10

Tried to watch the Trask as much as possible last week, and he shows flashes, but made a ton of bad decisions/throws that would have been picked off at the next level, and his current offensive line is better than the one he would play behind if picked by the Bears.

He sucked in the second half against Georgia, but overall his season has been great.

Honestly, it’s a crap shoot after Lawrence and Fields.

And even Fields has some one read issues that need to be fixed at the next level.

There would seem to be two approaches a sane franchise would take if they found themselves in the current situation the Bears are facing, but when you apply the expected approach by the current GM/HC you see all are doomed to failure.

One option is to go all in on a franchise QB in first round, use whatever capital you have to move up and grab your guy. However, the current brain trust in Halas Hall has not shown the sophistication or dexterity to pull this off without being duped into unnecessarily giving up too many picks or too high a pick. The current group would also not make the corresponding improvements to the OL or adapt plays/playcalling.

A second approach would be to draft the best O lineman in round one and pick a developmental QB in one of the subsequent rounds and keep a vet QB as your starter/mentor. This might be a better choice given that the franchise QBs will go to far up in the draft for the Bears to move up. Again, this is almost impossible with Pace/Nagy because Pace apparently has no idea how to identify/draft offense in the first round and Nagy cannot run a basic offense with a vet QB, let alone develop a young QB.

The only real option for a franchise QB reboot is to reboot completely because given the track record of failure by the current GM/HC there is no way in hell they will be able to rebuilt this offense.

draft O Line. Draft O Line. Draft O Line.

Why waste another QB pick. Get your O-line figured out so you can run the ball and keep whatever schmo you put back there to throw the ball safe.

I honestly wouldn’t be mad if the bears used all their picks on O line.
