I attended grade school in Triumph, IL. Me and 68 other kids - K-8.

One day, for class, we did a census of the entire town......from memory. They can't do that these days since the school closed about 25 years ago.

It was also the home of the Waltham Curling Club, which made no sense because Waltham was about 20 miles away. I don't think they paid for naming rights.

But, that is where I learned to curl.

Yep. That's also where we watched 4th of July fireworks.

I gotta get back there. That place is great.

Never caught a muskie there, but I have lost a shit load of $10+ lures in that lake, that's for sure.

Name some spots. I haven't spent much time in Ottawa besides maybe filling up the tank on the way out west on 80.

I'm no expert fisherman but we'd just head out on the river. We'd get lucky from time to time.

Then we'd get on a tube, drink a lot, and laugh at friends that wiped out that might have killed themselves.

SPOILER ALERT - Nobody died.

Ever go to Lake Shelbyville? That was only the serious fishing I've done. That was fun.

Got to get up too early for that stuff though.

No, but my best friend growing up went there a lot with his family, and he always talked about it.

Somehow I pictured you more an Earlville kinda guy. I have no idea what that means. I think that curling club still exists. Someone I knew took some kids to a youth event over there. They should freeze the belgians’s outdoor rolle bolle set up in Annawan during the winter.

Well, you're right. Our actual address was Earlville, something like Fire District 214. Rural Route 2.

But I did not go to school there. We lived about 10 miles away.

It's funny that we have some guys here who know a lot about "alternative" sports. Like sini, for whatever reason, knows a shitload about cricket.

That reminds me of a funny story. My wife works with a lot of Indians. IT- go figure. Her previous boss's kid is a travel cricket player. Anyway, they were hiring for a position and my wife walked in on three of her Indian colleagues excitedly looking at a wiki entry like little kids. She asked what was going on and they told her they thought one of the guys interviewing was a famous cricketeer and they were looking up photos of him on the Internet to make sure. For them it was sort of like if Joe Montana got hired at your job as a business analyst.

Our team could have gone to the National Championships in Colorado for curling in the late '80s.

But our Skip decided he'd rather be a punter for our High School team. So, we didn't go.

He was right though. He got a punting scholarship for college and ended up working for NASA.

Is curling a big thing in the Illinois Valley? If so, why?

No. At that time we were the Southernmost Club in North America.

Now I think they have them in various places in the US from California to Colorado to Georgia.

I played in DuPage County last year but it wasn't a dedicated club.

These days, they usually adjust some ice rinks to do some curling on certain days.

Big thumbs up to Waltham Curling Club. Beer served there on the honor system. Curling is great fun.

 That always impressed me too.

How do you know that? Have you been there?

Easy system to keep the kegs cold when you have a large ice rink.

i have been there a few times. A few years ago a large group of us from work rented a sheet of ice there for 3 hours for a very small fee (can't remember the cost) and it included several club members there to work with us and teach us technique. We had a blast. Afterwards one of the members brought those of us remaining back into the clubhouse for some post-gaming and they told us about the history of the club a bit, and also tried to get us involved in leagues. If i lived JUST a bit closer I would too, that game is fun. A bit too much of a drive for me in the dead of winter after work. A couple other times we went with friends and the kids and so forth and each time was a great experience. The members there are totally cool and helpful and glad to see you there, at least that's the impression I have always gotten. Its getting close to curling season now. It is short and sweet, just a few months and that's it.
