They don't do much in terms of adding wins, but boy can they cause losses.

Over 162, managers do not matter all that much. In a short season/series, they absolutely matter.

As RPB has pointed out, it's part of the reason why Dusty Baker has a higher career winning percentage than Tony LaRrussa, but Tony has three World Series rings to show for his work.
