I admit I'm a Sox fan, so I don't know every player on the Cubs roster, but are their any younger players that could be expected to improve for next season? Watching their games, seems like everyone "is what it is".

Not really. Team was build to win now and none of the veterans have been traded for prospects. Niko Hoerner could improve but has little to no power. They don't have any high prospects because they have been a winning team for multiple years.

This team should have been dismantled two seasons ago but they win just enough to keep the window cracked open.

Reminds me of the Bulls when Paxon refused to trade his core players who clearly lost a step.

You keep Baez, Contreras, maybe Happ and Hoerner.

The farm system is weak.

Everyone else can go.

But like MANY have said in this thread, no one really knows what the money situation is going to look like next season because of all the lost revenue this season.

I never blamed Maddon for the record. I blame Theo thinking the chemistry in the clubhouse was on Maddon and that Ross could magically turn them into 2016 version of themselves.

It seems to me that they are still riding the wave of 2016. Costellanos noticed it last year when he came over. They needed to sign Costellanos and trade Swarbs for whatever. Should have traded Bryant while he had value and stockpile SP, hoping you could find 1 or 2 to start for you.

Contact is more of a premium. High velocity pitchers more than ever too. Getting into bullpens and grinding at bats is not the winning formula it used to be

Ya think ? I saw somewhere ( maybe upthread) that the Cubs had the worst average in the majors against “velocity” ( 95 plus )

Yep, Theo's philosophy was to wear down the other team's bullpen in games 1 and 2 of a series and have an advantage for game 3. With 8 man bullpens, that just doesn't matter as much, and TTO guys are struggling across the league.

I'd like to see a couple of guys next year who can make solid contact, strike out only around 10%, and be impossible to shift against. .280/.333/.444 type of slash line. Bat one second and the other sixth or seventh.

This team WITH THE DH had the same percentage of doubles per plate appearance (3.7%) as the shitty 1991 team. And way worse than the craptastic 1977 team (4.3%).

I pulled those two teams at random out of my memory of mediocre Cubs teams.

the fact that you misspelled his name is actually poignant. Castellanos would have commanded too much of a salary given what the Cubs already had on the books. Short of Ricketts saying "spend whatever" it was impossible to sign him.

Realistically, what would you get for Schwarber at this point? A twenty-eight-year-old minor-leaguer? The best bet is to hang on to him and maybe trade him in the middle of next year if he hits some homers, or get what you can out of him next year and then let him walk.

Theo himself closed any remaining window that this Cubs core had when he refused to trade for Verlander and then gave up his two best prospects for a number 3 (at best) starter.
