I’ll give him that. I actually think the only musician on the Beatles that was not good was Ringo.

He was good for the Beatles in almost the same way Meg White was perfect for the White Stripes. Young Furious hated Ringo. Ringo was naturally left-handed and played right handed, so many of his fills move from right to left and he starts his fills with his left hand. He shines on songs like "Rain" and "Tomorrow Never Knows." That's his sound. He also seemed to be the musically sensible one in the band. Technically limited sure, but the band really didn't need more - unless you believe the Bernard Purdie stories.

The Stones at least popularized Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. Zepplin felt free to plunder the Estate of Robert Johnson and others.

Most of the lawsuits Zeppelin face were due to the lyrics being the same. The music was clearly and obviously different MANY times.

I listened to Zepplin for decades, until I realized just how much Page ripped off directly from now long dead blues men. Then I realized how much better the music, including guitar playing was in the earlier iterations.

But I'm still a fan.

Which Zeppelin won.

The guitar playing on Willie Dixon's "I Cant Quit You Baby" was NOT better than what you hear on Zeppelin's first record.

And the album version is NOT better than the guitar playing you here at the Royal Albert Hall in 1970.

Anyway, not a big VH fan, but Eddie was definitely an innovator and one of the all-time greats. My favorite Van Halen song might be one of their cheesiest, 'Humans Being' from Twister

Courts get things wrong all the time. All you need to do to know that Stairway was completely derivative is a simple 3 minute listen to Taurus.

Eddie Van Halen took the guitar to a whole new level, says Genesis guitarist

https://www.irishnews.com/magazine/ente ... t-2090726/

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett has described Eddie Van Halen as a guitar “supremo” who took the instrument to a “whole new level”.

Van Halen died on Tuesday aged 65 after a “long and arduous” battle with cancer.

Hackett, 70, is credited with pioneering a “tapping” technique during the mid-70s that the late guitarist would eventually become famous for.

He told the PA news agency: “He was tremendously good, a very explosive player. His solos were full of surprises. Obviously he had fabulous technique and timing. He just instinctively understood what guitars could do and pushed the envelope further.”

He added: “Eddie took that tapping technique and he took it to a whole new level. I think of him as el supremo in the tapping department. He’s the guy.

“Somewhere between whatever I came up with and what he developed you have something that informed not only rock music but pop music and all the rest.”

Van Halen said he first came across the high-speed, two-handed tapping technique while attending a gig by progressive rockers Genesis in the mid-70s.

Hackett urged fans of Van Halen to honour the late musician.

He said: “Unless there is a guitar heaven where he is able to function unimpeded, it’s up to the rest of us to take what he demonstrated and showed, and not try and best it, but try and honour it.

Never knew Genesis was a major VH influence. EVH was fond of claiming (as late as 2015) that the last album he purchased was Peter Gabriel's So.

And it has a similarity in being really objective. For instance EVH is my clear favorite when pressed for choosing one. But as for any instrument I carry usually a 3-4 pack dependent on style really. So for my main rock as mentioned EVH, for more of a bluesy easygoing playing and soloing it is David Gilmour. For actual blues it is Buddy Guy. At various times I can choose a few others for different reasons like Alex Lifeson or Tom Sholtz.

oh, I know but you also care about sports a lot

I was never interested in the rolling stone type of discussions some of my friends loved to engage in back in high school. If I liked something, I didn't question why I liked it and didn't care how it was created. Maybe its because I'm not musically inclined.

I watched a video of EVH and Hagar last night performing Zep's "Rock and Roll." For as a good as Hagar's singing was, he still didn't have the range that Plant did in his prime. EVH playing Rock and Roll was pretty painful to listen to. He thought tapping was good soloing, when it isn't. His soloing wasn't very original at all. Most of the time he was tapping scales or playing random notes with no melody whatsoever. Eruption is overrated.

If you want to hear what pure Jimmy Page sounds like, listen to the "Song Remains the Same", especially live versions from 1973. The amount of ideas just in that song as a composition surpasses anything that EVH ever did. And it was played on a 12 string electric or Page's double neck Gibson. Even Plant didn't think he did just to that song with his vocals, because it was that incredible.

Caller Bob has a serious inferiority complex. He likes to mouth off until he gets popped in the mouth and then runs away with his tail between his legs.

Faces-era Rod was pretty damn great, but it all went downhill from there.

Forget about the disco and Great American songbook stuff and just look at his Faces era work. I'm not sure who you could argue was better.

Daltrey would be my choice, but early Rod is pretty great.

Cornell is my non Daltrey greatest RR voice.

Alex Van Halen was never one of Young Furious' drumming heroes, but the dude was a creative and impactful drummer. You hear that Tama Rosewood snare with 8 pieces of gaffer's tape and you know it's him. From non-obvious drum beats/grooves to his bombastic customized drum kits, he really was like no one else. I still want that Roto-tom kit from the the Jump video.

Yeah that's what made Van Halen so special. Eddie obviously had a unique sound but so did David and Alex. When they mixed that together it created something that must have blown minds in 1978. I wasn't around then but it had to be an amazing experience hearing it for the first time. Plus they were a quirky band. Who else would do Ice Cream Man and Big Bad Bill?
