I heard a story from a relative who was a salesman for a chemical company. He went to a hotel bar in Cleveland in the late 50s and sat down next to a couple of guys who well into the night. He talked to them for almost an hour before he noticed people were kinda staring or recognizing them. He said that he didn't think anything about it at first until he overheard someone say something about baseball. When one of them got up he asked the other guy if the one who got up was famous, he looked like that pitcher for the Yankees. The guy smiled and said don't say anything. He's shy and doesn't want to cause a scene.

After a bit they got up said goodbye and paid for his tab. After they left the bartender asked if he knew who he was talking to. My relative said yeah the guy on the Yankees Whitey Ford. Bartender says no the other guy, Mickey Mantle.

For some reason he recognized Ford, but not Mantle.

Yeah, if you tell someone he won 69% of his decisions, they'll say, "He was on the Yankees." As if he had nothing to do with the success of his teams when he was putting up a lower ERA than Bob Gibson or Tom Seaver or Juan Marichal or Jim Palmer.

Also, even though he lead the league in innings pitched a couple of times, some people take issue with the way the Yankees often used him on their real good teams when they held him out for what they considered crucial matchups instead of using him as a real workhorse.
