I use to like him as a ballplayer.

Always thought that twitch he did at bat w/ this shoulder was interesting.

Then the years as a broadcast shiting on sandberg because of spite and jealousy ruined him for me and many cub fans.

his so called glorious announcing team w/ boring ass John Miller - never got. Those 2 put me to sleep more everytime they were doing a game.

RIP

Saying Sandberg wasn't as good as Morgan is like saying Santo wasn't as good as Mike Schmidt. No disgrace. Morgan had career 244 errors. Sandberg an amazing only 109. Sandberg would rarely dive up the middle. More between first and him. He'd give an obligatory swipe at balls barely bending his waist. Some Cub fans would be pissed he didn't dive. But I've heard ex players say he had such instinct, and a quick first step it made up for it.

The Big Red Machine had 3 hall of famers, plus Pete Rose. To me all great players. But, in order of impactfulness during the BRMs heyday I rank them Rose, Bench, Morgan, Perez. Not to take anything away from the greatness of Joe Morgan.

You'd probably have Bench first but for the fact he always wore a mask.

Yes...and I'd insert Foster and Griffey Sr. before Perez.

If you Google all-time best Reds polls or articles from Cincinnati media it's interesting. One did have Morgan 1. Some had Rose or Bench 1. Interestingly Morgan was 4 behind Frank Robinson repeatedly.

And Morgan is either the best or second best (Eddie Collins) second baseman ever.

Morgan was a nice little player who was protected with greatness in front of him and greatness behind him. Not so much in Houston but he still was an OBP monster.

Have you had this argument before? That Joe was the best Red ever? Did Joe pull you aside one day and convince you?

Extrapolate Ryno's postseason numbers to 50 games and wow!

He would have made the BRM that much more dominant in the postseason. Thanks Frank!

Hypotehtical Playoff Ryno would be a stud!

Meanwhile, real playoff Paul Konerko was better

I split the uprights there, just as I did with my earlier comments. No Parkey here.

Those huge OBP numbers are even more impressive because of who surrounded him.

It's funny how you much of a rabbit hole you can go down on Baseball Reference. I ended up going from Joe Morgan to Ted Williams (looking at OBP), to the 1941 MVP race (which Williams lost to Dimaggio, despite hitting .406 and an OBP of .553). Then I noticed that Bob Feller finished third in MVP voting despite of WHIP of 1.4. Today, a 1.4 basically gets you kicked out of the league.

Yeah, the Ted Williams page is really quite something.

Him missing 3 years of his absolute peak is well known but it’s still amazing to see it in black and white.

Hit .350 with an OBP of .499, left for the war, came back 3 years later and didn’t miss a beat the rest of his career til he was 40.

Unbelievable

Take the L on this Frank. You specifically said "output per October game". Your follow-up doesn't stick to that criteria.
