Live in the burbs and work in burbs. Wife and two kids. Weather was as good as it gets for 2020, but pandemic and protests made this the worst year ever for downtown Chicago. Cannot think of a worse year.

Curious others on the board who live in suburbs or city.

Wife and I went downtown for dinner in June for our anniversary on a Friday night and it was a ghost town. Walked mag mile, all the boarding up, it was just simple depressing.
Went again for a work meeting, again empty.

Obviously could not take my son down for a Cubs game, we used to stay at a hotel overnight, take kids to some stores, Water Tower place, Chicago sports museum, boat ride architecture tour.

It was the douchbad of the week and entire summer and weather will change. Dont really head downtown much in Winter unless work or work dinner. Christmas time we stay downtown for festivities

I know other cities are going through this, but man downtown Chicago is depressing as hell because of how great it really is, how clean it is, how much energy it used to have.

Sorry for rant, anyone else just kinda bummed about the summer. I mean we live here and put up with 7 months or so of crap weather for the summer and all the activities.

That was Nashville the other day. This isn't political, it's just reality. Conservative Cities are back open and thriving, while liberal run cities, are locked down shitholes.

Late summer was a great time to go downtown (unless it was right after the damages) as things were mostly open and empty. We spent a few nights in August at a hotel we wouldn't normally pay to stay at, had the whole upstairs at Reva on Navy Pier to ourselves, had a few boat trips tours that were maybe 10% filled, basically had a personal waiter at Smith and Wollensky for dinner, and walked right in for a full tea service at The Russian Tea Room. If you like the crowds I can see how yit would feel off, but I hate them, so it was perfect. My main "complaint" was that the hotel had no food service so we ordered delivery and some dude would bike breakfast over and it would take forever and be cold by the time he got there, 1st world problems I know.

I wonder if the city will ever be back to what it was. The need to go into work everyday is why cities grew and thrived. I was supposed to be at a conference downtown this month. Billions of dollars of revenue are lost that will never be recovered. It's just depressing.

Nice. Franklin is "denis" money.

My son is looking to move from there to Austin. He says Nashville is a weird place that can't handle the simple realities, especially with this damn virus. The Titans and Vanderbilt being repeatedly shut down just aren't talked about.

They just keep lying to themselves.

Nice to know some had good experiences in late August. I am not a big fan of crowds, but the energy/vibrancy was just missing and people can bash Chicago crime and it is deserved in some parts, but downtown ever since the 80s has been on an unbelievable run.

Chicago is not 24/7 like a New York and loop is always dead after business hours, but River North, Mag Mile, etc. I have never seen so depressing.

Felt like the 70s.

I am sure next year things will be "more back to normal."

I haven't set foot inside the city of Shitcago since the first day of rioting.

Fuck that city, and fuck what loser hypocrites like Lightfoot have allowed it to become.

I am down there quite often, i don't necessarily agree with your son. It is growing beyond belief and there is nothing that will stop it.

Know, I have a ton of respect for you with this comment, and if he thinks Nashville is bad, good luck with Austin.

June and July were ghosttowns.

Now it's more pleasant. Shit is open, but not crowded.

Still feels apocalyptic during the workday hours though. Quiet when it used to be bustling.

Quiet but not abandoned.

Fair enough, but since he's been working from home, he's probably spent a third of his time back here. And talking about his distaste for Nashville for the last two months.

But you're right about the growth. It's been that way for awhile. Like mold :D

Hit a couple of West loop establishments on Sunday afternoon. Most every outdoor table was taken. Good crowd and good vibe. But thinking this winter is not going to be pretty.

You can't do that, I actually really like bluegrass music. And I watched every episode of the Country Music series in PBS.

Twice.

I've eaten indoors at restaurants in the last few weeks several times. Masks, taking of temperatures, distancing. Clean. The mayor has to affirmatively encourage this capability within the next week or two. If she won't, she's lost another supporter .
