I don’t think the league is in trouble at all. I understand ratings are down but I don’t think the league is in any kind of peril. The younger generations consume the content very differently. But the engagement is there via Twitter and fantasy etc. Obviously if Silver has his druthers ratings would be at an all time high and all demographics would be consuming the product across all media formats.

But I think if the NBA were a stock it would be a great buy and hold investment.

As far as the social justice stuff...clearly it has alienated a certain segment of the audience, or potential audience, but I don’t think the KEY demographics are being alienated by it. Like it or not, I think Silver and company has a responsibility to align itself with those movements, since it is a player driven league and it’s what the players wanted.

In short, the NBA will probably never be the ratings powerhouse that the NFL is but why does that matter to those that are already a fan? In my view that’s just something detractors like to hurl at the league like “see. See how much you fucked up. I told you so.” But I’m inclined to believe that the large majority of those saying that haven’t been real fans of the league for the better part of 10-20 years anyways.

I think catering to the players is a real problem with the league. The political stuff is a bad play for appealing to as wide an audience as possible, but if you really care about basketball then you get over it.

The players plot where they want to play. They take off weeks during the regular season. That's going to turn people off and it's showing. If today's fans only consume the league through highlights on their phones, they are going to have to figure out a way to monetize it. And I think that will work about as well as newspapers going digital.

I've never not watched a sporting event because of the political beliefs of the owners/management/players, and I don't think I'm alone in that practice. I didn't watch a single second of the NBA finals this year because it was going up against playoff MLB action and the NFL, and I just like baseball and football better than basketball. Also, I believe that I read that the ratings of each of the four major leagues are down year over year. If that's true the NBA has some company.

It was a ratings collapse for the NBA though. And this was with a Finals that featured the premier player and franchise against a former team in another marquee market. They also are an indoor, cold weather sport. It seems like tough times ahead especially for this league.

So what do the tough times ahead look like in your crystal ball? What do you anticipate happening, or not happening, to or for the league?

Sounds like you’re rooting for a demise. But what specifically do you think will happen ?

And do you really think the NBA is worse off than MLB or NHL? I don’t see how anyone can honestly think that is the case

You want my address as well. It's enough to say you are way off and either believe me or don't.

Assuming it's a "normal" year next year, without a four month break in the middle of the season. I expect NBA Finals ratings to be stronger than this year.

I’m revising my earlier prediction of late February to January, or even Xmas depending on how ambitious the league wants to get.

Don’t think they’d be able to get in 82 games and an entire playoff run if they want to start the 21-22 season on time.

You can’t have young up and coming teams who weren’t invited to the bubble, or really any professional basketball player, not playing competitively for a year without seriously risking their development.

I also heard the NBA is debating whether or not to split the teams into 4 bubbles.

Midwest, West, East, and South.

Idk if they’d be able to have the regions play each other until the playoffs.

Well I’m sure they are looking for a ratings splash, so that’s why I was thinking Xmas.

The week after the super bowl could work to, as that’s usually a very dry ratings time of the year.

NBA preparing to begin negotiations on the next deal. Cratering ratings headed into negotiating the NBA's next national TV contract...not good for the league.

NBA currently has the 2nd largest national viewing rights contract in the US: $24 billion deal / 9 years almost matches the NFL's $27 billion over 9 years deal. NBA wisely signed it at the peak of the league's post Jordan popularity. Dunno if the league will be in hurry to get their next deal done. More likely they'll try to wait it out til they get closer to the expiration date this time. Last deal they extended 3 or 4 years before it expired.

Re: NHL/MLB. MLB relies far less on national tv broadcast rights for their revenue, only 12.4$ billion over 8 years current deal. MLB teams make their revenue off of local broadcast rights and attendance. NHL only $2 billion over 10 years for their U.S. national TV rights. NBA's national TV deal includes multiple games a week on TNT and ESPN and weekend games/playoffs on ABC. It's a huge chunk of each team's annual revenue.

This is probably most realistic. Will they play a half season schedule though or adjust to allow them to eventually start the following season on Christmas?

MLK weekend Start. Finish by Labor Day.

21-22 Start Christmas Day, finishes by August 1st. Then depending on ratings they may stay with that or keep moving to old schedule.

There’s no magic date. It’s all about when they can get fans in the stands. Playing in empty stadiums is not economically feasible again. And the owners won’t do it.
