When I hear constant reports from ZZ and JD, telling me that Orton and Grossman look bad in practice I wonder what is going on and I think these guys are playing to not make mistakes. Almost like they are looking to back into the job instead of winning it.

After these many years , I think we know what Rex's problem is and it has not been practice. He is usually very imprssive in practice because he is not going to get hit. Thus, his practice performances in the past have won him starting jobs.

Now I keep hearing he needs to limit his mistakes and is showing diddly shit in practices.

Are we going to try and Dilfer a Super Bowl?

It's not just the QBs that are going to suck.
Crappy Line + Crappy QB = 2 injured QB.
Crappy Line + Crappy QB + Crappy Receivers = 4-12

I have a feeling watching our offense this season will be akin to watching a 3-legged dog shit a bicycle chain.

It's hard not to argue. Neither Kyle Orton nor Rex Grossman appear to have established themselves at QB, and it might not be determined until the last preseason game in Cleveland at the end of August before Lovie makes up his mind on a starter. If it's Rex, sports talk radio shows are going to have a field day ripping him!

Rex Grossman has been given 5 years to solidify the Bears starting QB spot. He's done. He won't do it. If he was going to do it this year, the QB competition would be over already. This will be his 5th training camp where he is either the unchallenged starter or fighting for the starting job.

This is Kyle Orton's first training camp where he isn't the third string QB besides the last week of his rookie year. He clearly hasn't taken the job and there is a good chance he isn't the right person but he's a better bet than Grossman who couldn't do it in half a decade.

I give Orton a 20% chance of being the starting QB of the Bears in 2 years. I give Grossman a 1% chance. Give it to Orton and give him a chance to develop with the benefits a #1 QB gets. If it doesn't work out, we draft a rookie next year with a top 10 pick and start over with Orton as the temporary/backup.

I'm not trying to a Kyle Orton homer, but I just see no way that Rex figures it out in year 6. I can at least come up with a scenario where Orton still develops.

BR we all know that you love Orton and don't like/hate Grossman. You've made that pretty clear. If you thought training camp was meaningless last year (when everyone agreed that Grossman was head and shoulders better than everyone in camp) then how can you think it means anything this year? Your plan to give Orton the job (even though he hasn't earned it) is the same thing you complain about the Bears doing to Grossman. Why not let the best guy start? There are 3 more games left for both to prove themselves. I thought you wanted competition?

I like Orton, but I ask for you to find one post I've ever done talking about how great he is. He's just a better option at this point. I was all for him being benched his rookie year, as he shouldn't have been playing to begin with.

I wanted a fair competition. It was so far. Grossman didn't earn anything, in his 5th training camp as a starter(or competing for it this year)! The fact that Orton has a slight edge from reports is all I need to hear. Grossman should be in the lead now. That's the point. He's been the man at QB in Chicago for a really long time.

If Grossman and Orton are even, Orton should be the choice because he hasn't had the advantages Grossman had and has a better chance to improve. People underestimate how much of an advantage Grossman has had being the #1 QB for 4 training camps and now the co-#1 in this one. If he hasn't figured it out now, it won't happen. Orton hasn't figured it out yet either, and probably won't, but he has a better chance.

I said all summer that I wanted an open competition and it has been. Before the third game is the time to end the competition and unless Grossman goes above and beyond Orton in the next week it's time to name him the starter.

Normally, training camp reports are pretty positive. Everyone looks great in camp, this guy has great speed, this guy has learned new techniques, etc, etc.

It takes a lot for these reporters to be writing that these guys are not looking very good.

Evidently. This franchise has seemingly waved the white flag in the franchise QB search.

Well, me and Nas always have to restate our position. I just have to get on the record, again, as the season nears.

Grossman is better than Orton. Grossman will win the job. If by chance Orton wins it he'll be benched by week 3 or 4 cuz he'll suck.

Here's the thing however. They have no help on offense. So they are both behind the 8 ball. Maybe Devin will be good. That's our only hope. But I think Rex can bring out the best in Devin better than Orton.

I think Jim Miller was better than these two are now. Just to put it in perspective...

Beebo, neither Grossman nor Orton have looked all that good in the first 2 preseason games. In fact, the "NFL on FOX" voiceover, also the voice of E!, has made note of it in promoting Thursday night's preseason special vs. San Francisco. If you think the Bears' QB Derby is bad, would you believe J.T. O'Sullivan (?) is actually in line to start for the 49ers ahead of former #1 pick Alex Smith on opening day? I'm not kidding you, folks. The same O'Sullivan who I believe was on the Bears' practice squad at one time could be a starting NFL quarterback!

Martz must like him a lot, and Smith must really suck. Shaun Hill was also in the mix there.

I forgot about Shaun Hill, BD. Is it safe to say that Alex Smith is a flop? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Alex was the #1 overall pick about 3 years ago in the NFL Draft...Wasn't he picked the year before Houston drafted DT Mario Williams #1 and New Orleans drafted Kim Kardashian's buddy Reggie Bush #2? Just wondering... :?

If he can't win the starting job, yes, he's most likely a flop, and his career in SF is in serious doubt. His only hope would be a fresh start somewhere else. Total bust in SF though being a former #1 pick, and now losing (probably) a QB derby.

The Niners are just another team that has had trouble trying to find a successor to Steve Young & Joe Montana at quarterback. They thought Alex Smith was going to follow in the footsteps of two legendary QBs when they drafted him #1 overall. Looks intimidated on the NFL level, a far cry from playing at that football hotbed in Utah...

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Why do we still have no QB?? It looks like Orton will be the starter, great. My opinion is that overall Grossman is a much better QB then Orton. But he's a gunslinging pocket QB that needs a line. That game vs. Seattle the OL was beyond terrible. I think Rex's time in Chicago is done, but I don't expect Orton do do sheeeeeeeet(sorry just finished up The Wire). Cmon ORTON??????????? Once againt the bears will have no offensive presence on the field. Whats' that make like 15 years now since jim Miller tore it up that one year?

Hopefully the D will stay healthy and half the game will be fun!

I'll take this derby over any derby involving Jonathan Quinn, Chad Hutchinson, Cade McNown, Steve Stenstrom, Henry Burris, or Craig Krenzel.

I am officially turning on this staff. You have at least 16 games of regular season film on each of these guys and the idea that 6 quarters of preseason football makes the decision is ludicrous.

Is that the new battle cry of the Rex defenders? "I still think Rex is better!". Then why hasn't he proved it in his SIXTH(6) year of NFL football, in which he has started games in all of those seasons except this one?

That 6 game stretch where he tore up the league isn't coming back, and it was clearly fools gold. It was clear that the game this weekend was Rex's last attempt to play himself into a job, and he failed just like he has for years. Rex Grossman is not better than Kyle Orton. Kyle Orton isn't great either, but anyone who has the opinion that Rex is a better QB is in denial. Keep in mind, that Kyle Orton has slightly outplayed Grossman this year in only his first training camp competing for the #1 spot. Can you imagine how bad Orton would be beating him if this was Orton's 5th training camp with the #1 team?

The people that think Rex is a better QB probably are still comparing the 6 awesome games Rex had vs. Orton's rookie year(where he should have been holding a clipboard). Neither of those matter now.

This QB derby is over, and the end of the Rex Grossman era is welcome relief. Never has a QB been handed so much and done so little with it. I certainly hope the next QB the Bears draft isn't given half a decade of no QB competition without earning it.

Let Orton play and hope he doesn't get hurt. Let Rex go. Draft a rookie next year in the first round(no matter how well Orton performs) and let a three way battle for the starting job start next year with the "golden arm" we have as our third string QB.

Orton has to start behind that line.

Grossman is the winner.

Competition is over. Kyle Orton is starting the first game against Indianapolis.

At least the team can concentrate on getting him ready now.

It's hard to prepare for a constant beating. I hope they can get this O-line together. It's going to be a long season...

I love Good Rex, but I'll take 16/20 for 113 yards over 16/30, 145 yards and 2-3 INTs any day.

Remember, Thomas Jones rushed for over 100 yards in four of the games that Orton started.
Jones isn't going to Canton, but he's better than what they have right now.
1. Orton can't throw the deep ball.
2. The OL can't pass or run block.
3. The running back corps needs a lot of work.

How long with Lovie stay with Orton?
