Play Deep was quite possibly the definitive bubble gum pop album of the 80's. Wore that album out. Guitar player died a few years back too.

Guess we are entering that age where the people we listened to when young drop out. Just have to wait a little longer for David Crosby.

Man, both principle members gone in their early 60s. Sad :(

They put out some good stuff after their heyday, too.

I confuse this band with Hooters for some reason.

The Hooters and the Monroes are the same band. And we danced, but what do all the people know?

"What do all the people know?" is a great song. "And We Danced" is....not.

They're both great songs! And so is "Sue and Sonny" by the Rave-Ups, while we're in the neighborhood

They’ll always remind me of Gordon Beckham.

Now I’m thinking of Ozzie saying “bacon.”

I miss fun sports talk radio.

I frequently confuse Glass Tiger and Giuffria.

Whoever recorded this should be made to live in the pleats of McNeil's Steeler's Zubaz, but this SNL skit featuring Your Love was pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucS9LlF ... annel=TomM.

Agree . I should’ve characterized them more correctly as power pop.

I had no idea they were English. They always seemed like a California band to me.

how would an English group have linked the terms outfield and play deep. That takes a decent level of knowledge of baseball

I posted this not long ago:

It's funny that we have some guys here who know a lot about "alternative" sports. Like sini, for whatever reason, knows a shitload about cricket.

That reminds me of a funny story. My wife works with a lot of Indians. IT- go figure. Her previous boss's kid is a travel cricket player. Anyway, they were hiring for a position and my wife walked in on three of her Indian colleagues excitedly looking at a wiki entry like little kids. She asked what was going on and they told her they thought one of the guys interviewing was a famous cricketeer and they were looking up photos of him on the Internet to make sure. For them it was sort of like if Joe Montana got hired at your job as a business analyst.

To bring it full circle, the premier league team my wife's co-worker played for was the Rajasthan Royals.

IPL going on now, Royals have the worst RR in the league, -0.591. The lines on these matches are always super tight. e.g, Royals vs Indians on Sunday, seems like Royals should be bigger dogs to the Indians. Mumbai tied for first and have the best net run rate in the league at +1.201. Dunno if it's the books not caring to handicap these non-CWC matches in depth or the nature of the IPL twenty20 format means even a team like the Royals can take down a top tier team if they have a batter go off for a hundred (or a century?). And then due to the max overs thing the other team's less likely to match their run total:

Play Deep is really a fantastic record. Yes, "Josie on a vacation far away" is worn out to hell, but there's quite a few non-hit songs on that record that are still enjoyable. "I Don't Need Her" and "Say It Isn't So".....awesome.

100%. Mystery Man is the best cut actually. There really isnt a bad song on the entire thing.

Normally when someone describes a record as "raw" or "stripped" down....it's heavy. Play Deep is incredibly simple, raw, and pure but it's still very pop. It's a great example that pop songs don't need to be over-produced and over complicated.

i'd say that's a good description. i said the fixx light because each lead guitarist had the distinctive whammy bar sound.
