Yes but probably wouldn't change the declining fan base

Nothing will

As far as baseball goes, they have to make changes to get away from full "three true outcomes" baseball. At a intellectual level, a perfectly placed shift is a thing of beauty when somebody hits a line drive at 110 mph exit velocity right at the 3B playing in short right field. But I'd rather see the fences moved back, the grass cut shorter, and an emphasis on relying more on balls in play, consistently hitting doubles with a higher BA, and hitting to all fields. I just think that is a more enjoyable game that is also more difficult to consistently play in an expansion era (and 32 teams is coming).

I’m all for any changes that would make the game better.

I think moving the fences back could potentially tack on an extra 15 minutes to the average game which would move us in the opposite direction of where we’re trying to go.

Raise the mound? I don’t know. But something needs to change.

I think a rule where you have to have 2 infielders on either side of second base, effectively banning the shift, would be helpful for the more balls in play issue

The speed of the game is negatively impacted by 2 things:
1. Commercial / advertising breaks
2. Pitching changes

Any other factor / discussion is just noise. If they need to evolve the game, that's fine with m, but in terms of speeding up the dead time.....those are the only areas where you could truly make an impact.

I'm fine with the game, but sometimes life interferes with watching baseball. Dodgers v. Rays does nothing for me. We'd watch it if there was nothing else on, but just been busy with life and haven't cared. We did watch the Cubs / Sox during whatever they salvaged for the regular season.

SJW hasn't alienated me from watching, but like the other sports....I find it self-serving, forced, and not sincere. I'm more bothered by the empty seats and fake crowd noises...but that's just me.

Stepping out of the box/batter stalling on every pitch is another huge factor that could be smd should be fixed.

Here is a question: The fact that Tommy John Surgery is now not only routine but basically expected... did that help baseball in the long run, or hurt it?

As a kid in the 70s, you would routinely have pitching phenoms who would blow out their arm and be lucky to have 20 wins the rest of the way. Most pitchers had to rely on less power and more deception, and most hitters couldn't crank up the exit velocity.

Are those pitchers being able to take a year and fix their arms the precursors of TTO dominating baseball?

Guys in the 1968-1981 era like Jenkins, Gibson, Seaver, even lesser guys like Rick Reuschel, they pitched more innings but picked their spots between striking guys out and pitching to first or second pitch contact. Reuschel had less than 6K/9IP as a Cub, but he was in that tier of the Hall of the Not Quite Famous and had five seasons of 4.5+ WAR including that insane 1977 season on a bad team.

omg... don't even.... i mean don't even compare this place with baseball reddit. no offense...

but ya, we're not talking about here. we're talking about baseball reddit. i don't post in the same style there as I do there as that is a much more serious forum. nobody there is posting if they took a shit at mcdonalds or jagged off at work.

i learned a long time ago you must communicate to the level of the audience.

Bat flips aren’t about “excitement”. It’s about showing the other guy up. I don’t understand the desire to see bat flips or why they would generate additional interest in the game.

Completely agree with this but it's also hilarious to see folks get upset at bat flips

I still believe the actual game play has little to do with any if this. Cord cutting and a generational change in media consumption/ attention span is the main driver.

I think the game play is clearly a significant factor also. My dad and uncle thought that Chiefs Rams game from two years ago was the worst football game they ever watched. They were like if this is the future of football count me out.

Old folks love to bitch about anything and everything. Gameplay would be at least as high as politics as a contributing factor IMO.

You think bat flips are primarily about showing up the pitcher? Not just celebration/firing up your own team?

I equate it with TD celebrations which I dont think are showing up the defense

Personally I like when pro athletes are fired up and excited.
I think that's a better show.

Sandberg not flipping his bat after either of his home runs off Sutter didnt make the moment any less exciting or enjoyable for fans. Roger Maris had to be pushed out of the dugout after breaking the HR record. Do you think it was because he wasnt fired up or excited that he did that ? Or that the experience was lesser for fans that he didnt stop and watch the HR ?

When men were men.

All these flamboyant minority types are ruining the game.

If I celebrated every time I did my job, I’d probably get fired. These over paid primadonnas need to have that blue collar lunch pail mentality and just be thankful they no longer live in their shit hole countries

Thats how its going to be interpreted but the point that " Pimping a home run in the 3rd inning of a game in June " is what fans want to see and that's how you grow the game is ridiculous.

I don’t think batflips directly help grow the game, but the idea that it needs to be discouraged or looked down upon should be ended.

But of all the issues baseball faces, bat flips, are pretty far down on the list. Pace of play is fucking up the game horribly, which I know all agree with, and frankly I don’t see a realistic way to correct it.

I guess I mainly meant I completely agree with his last sentence in that post. I don't know if it's more about celebrating or showing the pitcher up, seems like a combo of both. But these guys are pros, I don't think there's anything wrong with showing people up. It's one of the reasons we all love Jordan

The most entertaining baseball game I've ever been to was one where my son's team was in a playoff game at Clemente. It was as loud, raucous and hilarious as a well played, one run game can be. The fans on both sides hung out together for awhile after the game laughing and wishing each other well.

Its not ridiculous though to say that showing emotion is something many people like.

Nothing will grow the game though.

Manfred dodged a bullet here. Think if the Dodgers lost. Would they have delayed the final game of the WS another 2 weeks if say 5 other players tested positive?

Best quote of the night : Did Snell test positive tonight too ?
