Why didnt Good Times and Bob Newhart do a cross over?

They were on the same network CBS.

Ive always wondered how cool it would have been for say James Evans to go to Bob Hartley's office to get therapy. Or Bob mentoring Michael at school at career day.

few other thoughts :

1.How come Chicago looks depressing as hell in both of the show's openings. I know the 1970s for the most part sucked but damn, couldn't they have filmed Chicago in the summer? I know the later newhart opening is much better than the original one.

When I see these shows and they show snippets of Chicago in the 70s in the show - more Newhart than good times - 20 years ago I use to feel like thank god the 70s ended but these days I'm filled with positive nostalgia. Funny how that works.

2.Howard was fucking Emily every day when Bob was away at work right (before she got the school job)? That's a given right? Why would he be over there every fucking night if he didnt miss Emily's pootang.

Because the What's Happening!!/Knots Landing one-night event bombed.

There was a rush out of city centers in the 70s following the 60s. Things weren't as nice downtown as they are today (well not today). Look at how urban NYC is portrayed in the openings of 70s sit coms like Welcome Back Kotter and All in the Family or LA with a Sanford and Son or Chico and the Man.

Personally, I never found those views depressing. I see a certain beauty in it

ya good point, i forgot about that. majority of us cities in the 70s became dumps. not until the 80s did the 'downtown' turnaround really happen and went into full bloom into the 90s. cities were considered regional especially chicago. But after the turnaround most regional cities became international cities like chicago.

The 70s were a depressing time anyway. I think it reflected in many parts of society.

I use to be like Howard always travelling back in the day.

But in the last 10 years I'd say definitely Eliot.

never watched that show.

you got me thinking back though that the shows i use to watch were mainly based on what channel had the best reception in the 70s.

Channel 7 had the best, Channel 5 the worst, and Channel 2 was somewhere in the middle. So lot of what I watched was on ABC and CBS.

but channel 5 use to come in fine after like 10pm. never understood why. use to at least catch Johnny's monologue before retiring for the night.

A very special TBNS: Emily answers a blind box ad in the Reader and ends up being held against her will by Bookman in the boiler room.

Well since Good Times took place in the projects, I'm not sure what you might have been expecting...

If the shows had been scheduled back to back, an April Fools prank of having the two shows filmed on each other's sets?

Wouldn't mind seeing some of those episodes again...can't say I've ever seen it available on any streaming platform.

I agree there is a certain beauty in the dirty and gritty. Taxi had that vibe.

no the opening shows a shot of the city from the chicago river with the hancock in the background. then pans all over the city. only the last 4/5 seconds show the projects.

I'm pretty sure that's the kind of stuff JORR was referring to. Remember the flash mob craze of ~2016 where da yutes figured out if you roll deep enough into a store there's a pretty good chance most of you will get away with your merchandise? Well they figured out that rolling up to people walking down michigan ave ~6-8 deep would have the same results (or running up to someone in a nice car stopped at a traffic light) so even tho I wanna say this kind of stuff was happening more in philadelphia than it was here, I distinctly remember hearing about some people on michigan avenue getting flash robbed in its heyday.

Plus you figure these would be the kind of crimes "they" don't want to grab the headlines since it could affect tourism, especially during a pandemic (are the flash robbers practicing safe social distancing guidelines alongside the increased likelihood of being masked up?)
