Digging into the Disney Channel and came across this. Essentially an updated retelling of the US race to space. I remember the original movie being one of the first if not the first movie I’d ever seen in a theater. So far I’m only two episodes in but it’s pretty good. More in depth than the movie due to its 7 episodes. Good special effects but not great. More in depth about the actual astronauts. So far it’s been better than average and worth a watch if you are interested in that part of history.

I've enjoyed it so far, but I'm annoyed that they cut out Chuck Yeager.

Chuck Yeager was the most interesting story of the movie, damn.

Damn, my first was Blackula, followed by a Shaft knock off or two, then Blazing Saddles. My parents took us to those, but wouldn't take us to see The Exorcist. Go figure.

Glamorous Glennis was the highlight of my Smithsonian Air and Space trip a few years ago. Not the Spirit of St Louis or the Wright Bros plane. The X-1 was the star to me.

Assuming we’re not counting cartoons mine were Disney movies featuring Kurt Russell as Dexter and I loved the Worlds Greatest Athlete.

Went there in '88, I had the exact same star. Felt like that it should've been in the Museum of Science and Industry where I lived as a kid.

Back then my mom picked the movies, if there was a kid's movie she thought was good, she'd make the whole school go see it. She was the principal. At home was decidedly different.

Yep

The movie was added to HBO Max this month, too. Haven’t seen it in a few years, but it’s in my list of things to watch soon.

Dang I can't remember what my first movie was.

Probably a Disney one though, as they only came back around every 7 years back then.

Mine may have been Oliver! I remember going to see the re-release of Fantasia when I was pretty young. My sister and I thought it was boring and my mom hated it so we left in the middle. My dad took me to see The Green Berets when I was very young too. To this day I'm haunted by Jim Hutton being impaled on that booby trap.

Where'd you see those blaxploitation movies, Reader, the Oriental or the Woods?

I sorta remember a few minutes of 2001: A Space Odyssey...then my mom walked us out.

Back then we had four old line movie houses that were less than a five minute drive to. I didn't go downtown to the movies until the early 80s when the neighborhood spots were all gone.

I don't know why but your post brought back vague memories of the opening sequences of The Godfather viewed from the back seat of a station wagon at a Drive-In theater somewhere near Decatur. I mostly remember waking up as we drove home.

First Movie in the theater for me was Masters of the Universe, which apparently I demanded to see 3 times in the theater. I do not remember that. But my mom says it was the beginning of my obsessive personality.

One of the better exchanges in that movie...

Guy Driving Jeep (pointing to a charred Chuck Yeager emerging from the smoke of his crashed F-104): Over there. Is that a man?

Levon Helm: You damn right it is.

I always found it funny how after Yeager banged up his arm, he still managed to stick with the test flights by using a piece of a broomstick to close the plane's canopy.

I was too young to understand the sample they were trying to extract from the pilots applying to be astronaughts. I thought they were just going to the bathroom.

I just checked and Chuck Yeager is still alive and kicking at 97 years old. Damn.

The Right Stuff movie is as old for my kids as the first talking movies are to me.

I get a little depressed when I hear these types of comparisons.
