I've only been to the Gurnee one...like twice. It was decent for the money, and they had beer.

I've been to the VH one. It was good.

There was another one that was in a similar vein to Mod, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it. There was one on the Glenview/Northbrook border off the tollway at Willow that I ate at a couple of times...it wasn't bad, but I guess it was super mismanaged because they shut down in the middle of the night.

It had "pie" in the name and it was bad. Like microwavable pizza.

It wasn't as bad as microwavable pizza...nothing is worse than that.

Except microwaving pizza that isnt supposed to be microwaved.

If you give a shit about how it tastes you aren’t buying 2/$5 Jacks pizzas.

I think you’re referring to Pie Five (or Pie 5), which is now a memory. I never went to one.

Here in the CBus metro area, and frankly all of Ohio, I have yet to find a good pizza place. Haven’t visited them all, especially the past 9 months, but Ohio does not know good pizza. They seem to love pepperoni - which isn’t a bad thing, but the big chain, Donato’s, is trash of the lowest order - their specialty is fully covering their thin-crust pizza with pepperoni to the point of that is all you see.

A lot of the chains/indies in Ohio have also apparently inherited a really bad habit from fucking St. Louis: using provolone (or “proval” ) instead of mozzarella. Provolone, or any combination with it, should never come within a continent of any pizza.

Many of these places also grind up their meat toppings and sprinkle it on to the point of not being able to taste them. Oh, and they like to cut their thin crust into strips as well.

The Ohio indies that DO come close always miss big time in one aspect - either the toppings, crust, or sauce are the one thing that ruins the rest of the pizza depending where you go, plus their prices are ridiculous.

My main trash go-to from the list would be Marco’s, but we don’t have one within 15 minutes, so even though I voted for Marco’s, and Jet’s would be my runner-up, the next best we have is Dominos - sad, I know, but frankly they are the best bang-for-buck within 10 miles of here, plus their stuffed cheesy bread is pretty damn fantastic, and the local store is about a two-minute drive.

This is like an essay on why you shouldn't move to shitty areas like Atlanta, Dallas, Raleigh and (insert whatever small city) people are fleeing to.

Small price to pay for the major net positive, plus I can always get some good stuff on one of my many visits back.

the style leaked into western NY. a place down the street from my grandparents house perfected it. so for me its more nostalgic than anything. but with that brand, i do the pequods method and sprinkle a little mozz between the crust and the little baking thing it comes in. pretty much amazing.

Mozz or parm? I've heard of it both ways.

add some garlic salt or powder, spread canned mushrooms on it....the $2.50 jack's pepperoni pizza punches well above it's weight.

I read this week that they bought out Bucky's. Maybe non-trash gas station pizza will become a thing up in the civilized world.

I like canned mushrooms on my pizza sometimes. Fresh ones dry out too much unless you sauté them first. But if a place has fresh mushrooms I more confident that their other ingredients are fresh too. This is why we don't get mushrooms on pizza too often.

Gotta disagree. Provel is fantastic. I’m not saying I’d use it all the time but it’s a nice change of pace if you go cracker-thin (STL) style crust.

Pizza is not a good enough reason to wear a mask while working out, pay thru the nose for just about everything, and seeming never having a normal restaurant experience again. I'm going to guess good Mexican places would replace pizza in Dallas, seafood in Raleigh, and southern food in Atlanta.

In my feckless youth of college, I would purchase a Tombstone pizza, crack it in half, and produce my meals for the next two days thus giving me more money to buy really cheap bad beer. And yet somehow it worked.

4.99 for a 16” cheese is a great deal. I usually cook at little higher temp to crisp the crust up.
It’s almost as good as the Dominic’s take and bake used to be. The wife and I would live it up on a Friday back in the day. Take and bake pizza and a bottle of wine for under $10.

Casey’s is alright with me. Beats a lot of the alternatives.

When I moved out to Bozeman it was culture shock on pizza. I swear even the garbage pizza at the chains was worse think we ended up settling for a garlic cheese bread from one of the local pizza places as the pizza sauces just were terrible. Had a boutique pizza place open when we were out there thst did the bake your own they would sell in grocery stores. Thst was about the “best” pizza option out there. God father’s was a train wreck on a cardboard crust.
