He was a bad ass soccer player. I was a soccer player as a kid. So I remember hearing about his legend. Didn't have youtube back then. I forget which world cup it was. But I think he had 3 goals in a game to win it for them. I could be wrong.

growing up, i had heard/read plenty - but didn't see much - a short video clip of him on a spanish channel here and there. he was still playing in the argentine league and tv in 1979-1982 wasn't the tv of today. the only euro football (english league or cup match) was on PBS channel 11 once in a great while, or going to ethnic soccer clubs/banquet halls that had satellite access to watch live from europe. saw him plenty during the 1982 wc. he was 21, his nation has just gotten defeated by england in the falklands war and they only had the WC to get their minds off the national humiliation. too heavy a burden on them and maradona/argentina failed during the best world cup i've ever seen- they looked bad going out.

in 1986 the argentine side wasn't that much better overall, but maradona was world-class enough to win them the cup. some revenge over england in the quarter-finals, 2-0..scored both goals, hand of God goal and the goal where he dribbled some 55 yards, dribbling 5 english players.

by that time, he was playing his club football in naples. he was more than eager to make friends with some powerful riff-raff. the drugs had caused problems for years - just a matter of time, i suppose.
